Infrared quantitative evidential breath-alcohol analyzers: in vitro accuracy and precision studies

The in vitro accuracy and precision of four infrared breath-alcohol analyzers, the Alcotest 7010, BAC Verifier, Intoxilyzer 5000, and Intoximeter 3000, were studied with a protocol adapted from portions of the U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) "Standard for Devices to Measure Breath Alcohol." Statistical evaluation of these studies indicated that all instruments met or exceeded the performance requirements modified from the U.S. DOT Standard for quantitative evidential breath-alcohol analyzers.

Abstract

This article puts into conversation existent and new scholarship regarding black radical women of the Left in the United States and South Africa during the twentieth century. It is primarily concerned with the evolution of women’s protest from localized issues of race-based discrimination to international, anti-colonial protests of the era. It is a timely response to contemporary historical analyses that emphasize the necessity of broadening historical concepts to include themes that cross traditional chronological, ideological, and geographical lines. This article posits four women whose ideological and organizational connections extended far beyond their own national borders and helped to change contemporary ideas regarding the supposed place of black women in national and international protests. The article illustrates the high level of awareness and commonality between communities in protest, and speaks directly to the conflicting intersections of gender, race, and protest that traversed both ideological and geographical divides.

Are data protection laws sufficient for privacy intrusions? The case in Hong Kong

An area of concern which relates to privacy intrusions in Hong Kong is the substantial changes that have taken place in recent years in relation to news gathering and reporting and the activities of local paparazzi. The issue that needs to be addressed is how intrusions of privacy can be protected in Hong Kong. The most significant reform to date has been the enactment of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance which provides rules for the fair handling of information about living individuals. However, the Ordinance is concerned only with data protection and does not provide a general privacy right. This article demonstrates the inadequacies of existing legislation for general privacy protection and examines the possibility of developing a separate action for general privacy via a) an action of extended breach of confidence as demonstrated by the UK model and b) a sui generis cause of action as can be seen in the New Zealand courts.     

DNA typing for identification of some species of Calliphoridae. An interest in forensic entomology.

To determine precisely post mortem interval, larvae and puparium species found on a corpse have to be identified. Among more than 200 cases examined at the entomology department of the Institut de Recherche Criminelle de la Gendarmerie Nationale, two-thirds concerned corpses less than one month old. Therefore, insects from first and second screwworms are the most frequently found [1]. Some species commonly found in France, such as different Lucilia and Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy, are easily identifiable at an adult stage, but are almost impossible to differentiate at immature stages when only fragments of puparium or necrosed first instar larvae are available. For this reason, an easy and objective method of identification was thus searched by genetic analysis of these insects. Sequencing of partial gene of sub unit I of cytochrome oxydase has been used to predict restriction sites. Restriction enzyme cleavage of PCR products with Dde I allowed us to differentiate these species.
