Reflective practice is generally regarded as an important part of legal education, and the typological models of reflection created by the likes of Schon, Boud, Mezirow and Moon to develop and evaluate the reflective practitioner are becoming as instrumental in LLB curriculum design as the learning models of Bloom, Gibbs and Kolb. What is less clear is the most appropriate methodology for the assessment of reflection, and, in particular what constitutes good reflective writing in this context. By using the medium of reflective writing this piece will explore and evaluate the approach taken to the assessment of the reflective report component of the problem-based learning LLB at York Law School. Reflective practice is an important part of the design of the problem-based learning curriculum and is fully embedded in the learning and teaching at York Law School. It will be shown here that it is just as important to engage the marking team in the rationale and educational benefit of reflective practice as it is the students. Only with a clearly defined task, a structured assessment framework, and ongoing marker training and development, will reflective practice have a meaningful place as an assessed component of the LLB. 相似文献

This paper reports on the initial findings of an interdisciplinary research project on the governance of human genetic databases in England and Wales. The number of biosample and information collections has expanded, yet considerable legal uncertainty surrounds their definition, collection, storage, management, and use which could inhibit research and clinical practice, while failing to protect the rights and interests of all stakeholders. We report some initial findings from the legal research and identify major challenges associated with defining 'genetic databases'. We identify a wide range of relevant instruments and regulatory actors, and suggest that none adequately addresses the challenges posed by contemporary research techniques or the'corporeal'and'informational'materials used in the genetic databases context. This preliminary analysis seriously questions the efficacy of the current regulatory framework and concludes that developing an appropriate governance framework for the creation, maintenance, and use of genetic databases requires the bringing together of legal analysis with good quality empirical evidence. 相似文献

Purpose
The purpose of this study is to propose a mediational model for the mechanisms through which a diagnosis of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder between the ages of 10 and 12 predicts positive and negative early adult outcomes for African Americans.Methods
The study sample (n = 211) was drawn from the Des Moines, Iowa subsample of the Family and Community Health Study. Participants were first assessed between the ages of 10 and 12, again between the ages of 12 and 18, and finally at 18 to 23.Results
Findings indicate that a diagnosis of ADHD before age 13 indirectly predicted subsequent exclusionary school discipline and juvenile arrest in adolescence, and both arrests and educational attainment in young adulthood.Conclusions
These findings offer support for the School to Prison Pipeline model, showing that for some African American children, a childhood diagnosis of ADHD can lead to negative school experiences that result in harsh school-based discipline, which in turn open the door to justice system involvement spanning several developmental stages. 相似文献24.

Human Electrical Muscular Incapacitation (HEMI) is used to subdue combative individuals. Changes in cardiac electrical activity have been proposed as the cause of death in a small fraction of these individuals. The current study sought to determine whether changes in QTc interval occur after HEMI exposure. Twenty‐four participants had EKG readings before a 5‐second HEMI exposure and within 30 min after exposure. All subject EKGs were read by a data‐blinded cardiac electrophysiologist who calculated a QT corrected (QTc) interval. QTc interval was calculated using Bazett method. QTc prolongation was defined as >430 ms and a threshold of 30 ms for identifying QTc lengthening. Five participants experienced QTc prolongation and six had QTc lengthening. One participant developed QTc prolongation exceeding 500 ms, which carries a risk of developing multifocal ventricular tachycardia. These results suggest that HEMI exposure may cause EKG changes with a risk of ventricular tachycardia. 相似文献

Much of the substantive content of undergraduate law programmes in England and Wales is framed by the requirements of the legal regulators. There are now proposals for changes to the entry-level assessment of the legal knowledge of prospective solicitors, which include the use of a standardised multiple-choice test (MCT). It is anticipated that for most law students this would be taken alongside or immediately after their undergraduate studies. This paper uses discourse analysis to explore the positioning of the regulators in the consultation documents for this proposal, and undertakes a review of the literature on the use of MCTs in legal education. By using theoretical concepts derived from the work of Basil Bernstein, most notably the recontextualising rule, and classification, it explores the potential effects of this change in policy on university-level legal education. 相似文献

AIDS is the leading killer of African Americans between the ages of 25 and 44, many of whom became infected when they were
teenagers or young adults. The disparity in HIV infection rate among African Americans youth residing in rural Southern regions
of the United States suggests that there is an urgent need to identify ways to promote early preventive intervention to reduce
HIV-related risk behavior. The Strong African American Families (SAAF) program, a preventive intervention for rural African
American parents and their 11-year-olds, was specially designed to deter early sexual onset and the initiation and escalation
of alcohol and drug use among rural African American preadolescents. A clustered-randomized prevention trial was conducted,
contrasting families who took part in SAAF with control families. The trial, which included 332 families, indicated that intervention-induced
changes occurred in intervention-targeted parenting, which in turn facilitated changes in youths’ internal protective processes
and positive sexual norms. Long-term follow up assessments when youth were 17 years old revealed that intervention-induced
changes in parenting practices mediated the effect of intervention-group influences on changes in the onset and escalation
of risky sexual behaviors over 65 months through its positive influence on adolescents’ self-pride and their sexual norms.
The findings underscore the powerful effects of parenting practices among rural African American families that over time serve
a protective role in reducing youth’s risk behavior, including HIV vulnerable behaviors. 相似文献

This study included three waves of data, collected from approximately 890 African-American children and their families. Antecedents
and consequences of psychiatric disorders among this population were examined. Children’s temperament, pubertal timing, and
experience of stressful life events were tested as antecedents of psychiatric disorders. Several aspects of school functioning
were then tested as consequences of psychiatric disorders. In addition, children with a single psychiatric disorder and those
with comorbid disorders were statistically compared. Results showed that (1) children with at least one disorder, compared
to those with no disorder, exhibited significantly more difficult temperament, experienced puberty earlier, and underwent
greater numbers of stressful life events; (2) those with at least one disorder had significantly poorer school outcomes than
those with no disorder; (3) children with comorbid disorders, compared with those who had only one disorder, displayed lower
educational aspirations and poorer school commitment.

This article is based on research that explored and analysed the potential role of diasporas in development aid in the Netherlands. The research adopted the hypothesis that development agencies could benefit from the knowledge, skills, and views of diasporas as ‘agents of development’ and thereby make aid more effective and sustainable. Data were derived from semi-structured interviews with representatives of diasporas residing in the Netherlands; Dutch NGOs selected by the Dutch government for their capacity-building programmes; official donors, namely the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken); and international organisations, such as the International Organization of Migration (IOM).
