The usual death of a long-time heroin user is described. The significance of this case is that death occurred suddenly and unexpectedly during incarceration. In the United States, such deaths are frequently followed by lawsuits against the prison authorities. Drug abuse can cause death in many varied ways.     

Chromotrop-aniline blue stain for improved demonstration of fresh heart muscle fiber damage

The Chromotrop-Anilinblue (CAB) trichrome staining method, developed for liver specimens, enables rapid detection of fresh damage to myocardial fibers by staining contraction-bands bright red. Dehiscence of the transverse striation, although yet unexplained in its pathogenetic significance, becomes visible with CAB staining. Overall, the method seems less sensitive to artefacts than former so-called infarction-staining-methods. Contraction-bands are not conclusive evidence for ischemic damage, as they also appear in traumatic heart damage (e.g. knife- and gunshot-wounds).     

Nursing Students' Attitudes Toward Victims of Domestic Violence as Predicted by Selected Individual and Relationship Variables

Access to quality health care for victims of abuse is often limited by the attitudes of health care professionals. Data collected from female nursing students (n = 155) revealed that those students with more egalitarian sex-role beliefs and a greater sense of control over life events were more sympathetic to battered women than those students with more traditional sex-role attitudes and less perceived control. Sex-role egalitarianism was found to be the best predictor of attitudes toward victims of domestic violence. Implications for health care practitioners and policy makers are presented.     

Demographic change,labour force dynamics and employment: new problems and old politics?

Abstract. The paper examines the problems for social protection and economic growth that arise from the development of a dualistic labour force – divided into a privileged core and a disad-vantaged periphery – created by the dynamic interaction of labour supply rigidities and rapid technological growth. It concludes that reforms of labour market institutions have to be introduced in order to solve the existing problems.
