A practical method for the accurate determination of methemoglobin in blood containing carboxyhemoglobin

Kinetics of the oxidation of carboxyhemoglobin (HbCO) by potassium ferricyanide was studied photometrically in a weakly acid solution. An increase in the absorbance at 630 nm reached a maximum within 10 min when over a 100-fold excess of ferricyanide to hemoglobin iron was used. A slight decrease in the absorbance was observed after completion of the reaction when over a 500-fold excess of the reagent was used. In the presence of 0.4% Sterox SE, the absorbance began to decrease without complete oxidation. From these findings, a simple, rapid and accurate method for the determination of methemoglobin (Met-Hb) in blood was devised. The method was compared with two other methods, using 11 blood samples containing various amounts of HbCO, and proved to be suitable for blood containing elevated HbCO as well as for ordinary blood.     

A fatal case of hypovolemic shock after cesarean section

We report a fatal case of hypovolemic shock caused by uncontrollable hemorrhaging after emergency cesarean section. In this patient, the incision in the uterus was located only 1 cm from the cervical os. We suspect that this close incision was the cause of the damage to the uterine venous plexus and the bleeding. We discuss the cause of death and offer advice on performing autopsies in patients who have died of bleeding after cesarean section.     

Providing credibility around the world: effective devices of the Cape Town Convention

This paper analyzes the characteristics and effects of the Cape Town Convention, which provides legal protection for investors in relation to asset-based aircraft financing. Some countries lack credibility for investors, who believe that the protection level of creditor rights in the country differs before and after investment. This time inconsistency problem results in credit rationing. Airlines in such countries cannot access the credit market, particularly the international capital market. This paper first examines why developing countries have been suffering from a lack of credibility and from credit rationing, and then explores how the Convention resolves this problem. We focus on two devices: the white list system and the system of declarations. The former gives the contracting states incentive not to break the Convention. The latter is considered to promote the ratification of the Convention by potential contracting states. These devices enable the Convention to attract a number of states.     

Right ventricular damage due to pulmonary embolism: examination of the number of infiltrating macrophages

To investigate the pathological changes in the heart induced by pulmonary embolism, 20 autopsy cases of pulmonary embolism and 10 control cases of acute death from traumatic injury were examined. Adding to the routine hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining, immunostaining with CD68 pan-macrophage marker was performed on the specimens obtained from both right and left ventricular walls. The number of macrophages was counted semi-quantitatively in 100 random high-power fields (HPF). Although typical pathological findings of myocardial infarction was not observed in any of the cases, 16 of the 20 pulmonary embolism cases showed an increase in the number of macrophages, mainly in the right ventricular wall. Four cases showed massive macrophage infiltration in the entire right ventricular wall. It is speculated that ischemia due to pulmonary embolism may be connected to its pathogenesis.     

New detection method for ribonuclease 2 (RNase 2) using immunoblotting with specific antibody

A ribonuclease (RNase) was isolated from the urine of a 35-year-old male and purified to electrophoretic homogeneity. The enzyme was tentatively designated RNase 2. A rabbit antibody produced by injection of the purified RNase 2 was able to distinguish RNase 2 from another type of RNase coexisting in body fluids. With this antibody it was possible to detect RNase 2 isozymes in human serum and urine without difficulty using isoelectric focusing or sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, followed by immunoblotting. Both RNase 2 in serum and urine seemed to exist in multiple forms with regard to their molecular masses and pI values. This technique may prove to be useful in genetic and forensic studies of RNase polymorphism.     

Identification of fetal bloodstains by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for human alpha-fetoprotein

A rapid and highly sensitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for determination of human alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) using commercially available reagents was devised and applied to identification of fetal bloodstains. When experimentally prepared bloodstains, 1 by 2 mm in area, were submitted to analysis, only fetal bloodstains showed positive reactions in the present ELISA. The reactions did not change significantly when these bloodstains were stored at room temperature for one week. The present ELISA seems to be suitable for forensic science practice.     

Correlates of depressive symptoms among battered women

It is important to examine the concomitants of depressive symptoms reported by battered women because of the high frequency and potentially vulnerability-enhancing effects of these symptoms within battering relationships. In the present study, 10 environmental and behavioral skills correlates of depressive symptoms were examined in 136 battered women. The results of the Simultaneous Multiple Regression suggested that 46% of the variance in depression scores could be accounted for by scores on measures of these 10 variables. Four variables were found to be uniquely and significantly associated with depressive symptoms: self-reinforcement, realistic assessment, number of losses, and a history of depression. These results suggest that battered women who realistically assess their battering relationship and who report poor self-reinforcement skills, losses, and histories of depression may be at particular risk for depression.

The Institute for International Policy Studies (IIPS), an independent, non-profit research institute founded in 1998 by former prime minister of Japan Yasuhiro Nakasone, has pursued an ambitious research program that covers the fields of international politics, economics, security, energy, and the environment for 30 years. The Institute also convenes international symposia and seminars on important political and economic issues and conducts joint projects with other research institutes in Japan and internationally. Research findings and policy proposals are published in print and on the website.

On the occasion of the 30^th anniversary of the Institute’s founding, and to commemorate the 99^th birthday of Founder and Chairman Yasuhiro Nakasone, as well as recognize the background and purpose of the research work and further clarify the mission for future research endeavors, as of January 1, 2018, the Institute has been renamed Nakasone Yasuhiro Peace Institute (NPI).     

D5S818 Typing Discrepancy Between PowerPlex® Fusion and Other STR Kits Including GlobalFiler® Caused by a One‐base Deletion in 31 Nucleotides Upstream of the Repeat Region

Short tandem repeat (STR) typing is widely used in forensic investigation. When the same DNA sample is analyzed with different STR typing kits, a typing discrepancy is occasionally observed. In this study, we examined the cause of a typing discrepancy in a sample at D5S818 locus. This sample was designated as 10, 12 using Identifiler^®, Identifiler^® Plus, GlobalFiler^®, PowerPlex^® 16HS, and PowerPlex^® 18D, but as 9.3, 12 using PowerPlex^® Fusion. Sequencing results indicated that the shorter allele in the sample had a deletion (U31Tdel) at 31 nucleotides upstream of the repeat region (AGAT)₁₀. This deletion was located in the binding site of the published D5S818 forward primer in PowerPlex^® 16 and was only 9 and 11 nucleotides downstream of our estimated 5′ end position of D5S818 forward primer in GlobalFiler^® and PowerPlex^® 18D, respectively. We also examined the effect of primer length on the heterozygous peak balance in this sample.
