Legislatures worldwide are dominated by wealthy elites, who are often out of touch with the needs and problems of citizens. Research shows that the underrepresentation of the working class matters in terms of policy processes and outcomes. Yet the research on class has largely focused on blue‐collar representatives, who are primarily men. Working‐class women are more likely to hold pink‐collar jobs, or low‐status occupations dominated by women. We argue that pink‐collar legislators are uniquely positioned to legislate over education and social service policy. To test our argument, we combine a new coding of working‐class backgrounds that accounts for pink‐collar representation with state spending data on education and social services from US states over time. Modeling compositional budget data, we find that class and gender intersect to shape policy outcomes via state budget allocations, with women's pink‐collar representation associated with increased spending on both education and social services. 相似文献

The past year has seen a global upsurge of violent attacks by lone, mentally unstable individuals. The motivations for these attacks have varied and extremist ideological drivers are rarely ‘pure’, but mental health problems and personal grievances are common themes. Mentally ill and disenfranchised individuals may be vulnerable to extremist messages and propaganda because such beliefs can be a means of interpreting their social difficulties. Terrorist messages can also be adopted by psychotic people who are seeking to make sense of their symptoms. Most lone-actor attacks are preventable, if there is a system in place for identifying and intervening with antecedent behaviours, which include mental disturbances and the social problems that frequently accompany these conditions. Joint police-mental health models developed to assess and manage fixated persons can be applied to other forms of grievance-fuelled, lone-actor violence. This paper describes the establishment of such a service in Australia, and provides some preliminary data. It also discusses the role of mental health in the current security environment. 相似文献

Childhood Sexual Abuse,Other Childhood Factors, and Pathways to Survivors’ Adult Relationship Quality
We were interested in understanding how the effects of childhood sexual abuse, in concert with other negative childhood experiences,
were carried forward into adult romantic relationships. Data from 15,831 married or cohabitating individuals were gathered
via the RELATE Questionnaire. Empirical research, attachment theory, and a general model of adult relationship quality suggested
that the path from negative childhood events to adult relationship quality was mediated by a number of individual and relational
affect-laden variables. Results showed that childhood abuse and other family-of-origin variables work primarily through the
adult survivor’s perceptions of the events of his or her childhood. This “current impact” variable, along with the current
level of depression, work through an emotion-laden relationship variable—level of emotional flooding during couple conflict—to
influence the relationship quality outcome variable. Treatment implications are discussed. 相似文献
