The present study examined the relationship between participation in sports during adolescence and physical activity and subjective
health in young adulthood. A sample of 8,152 (males = 50.8%, females = 49.2%) adolescents from the National Longitudinal Study
of Adolescent Health were used. Results of the study showed that participating in an organized sport during adolescence was
associated with higher levels of physical activity and better subjective health during young adulthood after controlling for
participation in general physical activities (e.g., jogging, biking, skateboarding) during adolescence. Participation in sports
during adolescence was associated with more positive self-beliefs 1 year later that, in turn, were associated with higher
levels of moderate to vigorous physical activity and better subjective health 6 years later. Results suggest that positive
self-beliefs partially mediate the relationship between adolescents’ participation in sports and two health outcomes in young
adulthood: moderate to vigorous physical activity and subjective health. Findings highlight the utility of youths’ participation
in organized sports for promoting healthy outcomes. Implications for policy and practice are discussed.

Despite increased representation in correctional work settings, women still encounter obstacles in this male-dominated occupation—obstacles that have the potential to affect their levels of job stress and job satisfaction. Although gender-based differences in job stress and job satisfaction have been analyzed in several prison settings, much less work has been conducted in the often neglected correctional arena of jails. The current study fills this empirical void by examining jail staff at a large county correctional system in Orlando, Florida. Ordinary least squares regression analysis indicated that different facets of the work environment differentially affected the job stress and job satisfaction of 419 women and 493 men working in a large urban jail system. Specifically, role ambiguity, perceived dangerousness, coworker relations, input into decision making, and administrative support had larger effects on job stress for women compared to men. For job satisfaction, the only workplace variable to have a gendered effect was administrative support, which also had a greater effect for women than men. The findings reveal gender-related differences, especially in terms of job stress. 相似文献

Correlates of formal and informal social/crime control in China: An exploratory study 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
There are two major ways for a society to control its members, formal and informal. A major goal of both forms of control is to curb criminal behavior. Formal criminal justice control uses the law and official government agencies (e.g., police, courts, and corrections) to ensure compliance. Informal criminal justice control uses morals and social institutions (e.g., family, peers, and neighbors). China has a long history of using informal criminal justice controls. Nevertheless, there has been a movement during the past several decades towards use of formal criminal justice controls. This study examined the level of agreement with both forms of control and the correlates of each form using a survey of Chinese college students. Findings from multivariate analysis indicated that those who held a Confucian belief in law and punishment, those who had a higher distrust of strangers, and those who grew up in rural areas were more supportive of informal control, while those who were majoring in the area of law and male respondents were more supportive of formal control. 相似文献

Robert Lambert 《Critical Studies on Terrorism》2014,7(1):165-181
Written by an academic and former undercover police officer, this article consists of an initial response to Basia Spalek and Mary O’Rawe’s article “Researching Counter-terrorism: A Critical Perspective from the Field in Light of Allegations and Findings of Covert Activities by Undercover Police Officers”. It acknowledges the importance of concerns raised by Spalek and O’Rawe in regard to undercover policing and seeks to identify areas for constructive debate both in the immediate future and in the long term. Mike German’s book Thinking Like a Terrorist is referenced to illustrate a potential model of best practice when police officers are tasked to infiltrate groups or cells carrying out acts of terrorism and political violence. Likewise, Rachel Monaghan’s article “Terrorism in the Name of Animal Rights” is referenced to suggest that German’s model might apply in respect of acts of terrorism and political violence committed in support of animal rights no less than when committed in support of far right politics. German’s book also serves to illustrate an argument that prior employment as an undercover police officer might not necessarily undermine trust in that officer's subsequent work of a different nature. Crucial here, is the author’s claim that his subsequent police partnership work with Muslim groups in London was based on reciprocal trust and did not employ deception, axiomatic to undercover policing, in any respect. Although the author is presently restricted by ongoing investigations and legal proceedings, the article outlines a basis on which he might contribute his experience of undercover policing to future discussions. 相似文献

The Forensic Science Service (FSS) has devoted appreciable effort to developing the application of the principles of evidence interpretation. Much of the work has been reported in previous papers in this journal, in particular those that develop a model for Case Assessment and Interpretation (CAI). The principles of interpretation are restated and the implications for structure and content of statements are described. 相似文献

Jails are important, yet understudied, components of the American criminal justice system. While most research on correctional
personnel has focused on prisons, a growing body of work is beginning to emerge on jails. This is encouraging given the unique
circumstances that occur within jail environments (e.g., diversity and mobility of offenders, health issues among detainees,
overcrowding, lack of training among staff, etc.). Given these conditions, the staff members who run jails become the glue
that holds them together. The following study contributes to this burgeoning area of empirical inquiry by examining a variety
of antecedents of job stress, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment among jail personnel. Using survey data collected
from a large county correctional system in Orlando, Florida, the findings indicate that staff perceptions of professionalism,
detainee control, and administrative support all significantly impact degrees of job stress, job satisfaction, and organizational
commitment. 相似文献
