Geopolitics,Ethnic Conflicts along the Border,and Chinese Foreign Policy Changes toward Myanmar

Ever since Myanmar reoriented its foreign policy as a result of its transition to democratic rule in 2010, it has significantly improved its relations with the West, particularly the United States. Amid heightened geostrategic competition between the U.S. and China, how can we understand the Chinese government’s changing approaches to Myanmar, where China’s strategic and economic interests face unprecedented pressure? This article examines those changes in the context of the Chinese government’s response to three militarized ethnic conflicts along its border with Myanmar before and after Myanmar’s foreign policy reorientation. Drawing evidence from Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs statements and Chinese media coverage of the 2009 and 2015 Kokang conflicts and the 2011-2013 Kachin conflict, the article argues that combined geopolitical changes and domestic nationalist signaling explain the variations of China’s foreign policy approaches to Myanmar. The article thus contributes to ongoing interest in China’s foreign policy approaches to Southeast Asia in the wake of geostrategic competition between China and the United States.

Eastern Mediterranean Gas Discoveries: Local and Global Impact

The ongoing discoveries of natural-gas reserves in the eastern Mediterranean region significantly affect international relations. Since their viability has been increasingly confirmed, they have attracted public attention in the international energy market. Focusing on current gas production and trading in the Middle East, this paper studies the anticipated impact of gas production in the sea on geopolitical relations in the Middle East and investigates how these results may change the geoeconomic strategies of global energy-market players as well as nearby countries. In addition, our analyses provide comprehensive insights into the evolution of gas discoveries in the Eastern Mediterranean.     

湖北省利用外资的现状、问题及障碍性因素分析

近年来,虽然湖北省在利用外资方面取得了一定的成效,利用外资的环境也在不断的改善,引进外资的金额在逐年缓慢地上升。但值得注意的是,随着全球各国对外资的积极争夺,加上我国各省市之间的竞争也日益激烈,湖北省招商引资面临的困难越来越多,引进外资的难度越来越大。因此,认真研究湖北省利用外资面临的新形势、新问题,分析目前存在的主要障碍性因素,制定应对策略与措施,有着非常重要的现实意义。     

行政许可法实施中的困境

尽管社会各界对《行政许可法》的制定与颁布曾经反响空前、赞誉颇多,但是,该部法律实施1年多来的实践说明,由于观念和体制惯性的影响、实施前清理的不彻底、立法技术本身的不足,以及监督与其他配套制度的不健全等方面的原因,使得其实施的实际效果与人们的事前期待并不匹配。
