Ethnic competition and mobilization in Taiwan’s politics

Both global and historical contexts point to the importance of studying ethnic issues in Taiwan. In this article the author attempts to examine the political conflicts between the immigrants and natives in Taiwan and their resource mobilization strategies. Statistical findings based on Taiwan’s election outcomes since 1986 are presented. The triangular relationship among the T-KMT, C-KMT, and DPP are analyzed. It is predicted that the mobilization strategies for the younger generation of immigrants may go beyond the tradiational political arena. Die Gestaltung und Regulation sozialer Beziehungen im Lebenslauf: Eine entwicklungspsychologische Perspektive

Der Beitrag behandelt die Mechanismen der lebenslangen Beziehungsgestaltung aus entwicklungspsychologischer Perspektive. Es werden sechs Leitsätze der lebenslangen Entwicklung sozialer Beziehungen vorgestellt. Während ihres gesamten Lebens beteiligen sich Individuen aktiv daran, die Leistungen und Strukturen ihrer sozialen Umwelt in Einklang mit ihren Bedürfnissen und Ressourcen zu gestalten. Im Allgemeinen sind dabei selbst- und fremdregulatorische Strategien der Beziehungsgestaltung zu unterscheiden, wobei angenommen wird, dass beide Strategien auf die Ausweitung der Handlungsmöglichkeiten des Individuums gerichtet sind. Eine beispielhafte Strategie der Beziehungsregulation bezieht sich auf das Zusammenspiel zweier sozialer Orientierungen des Individuums: dem Streben nach sozialer Wirksamkeit und dem Bindungsstreben. Anhand empirischer Befunde wird illustriert, wie die Ausprägungen der beiden Beziehungsorientierungen im Lebenslauf variieren und wie diese die Zusammensetzung und Leistungen persönlicher Netzwerke beeinflussen. Einflüsse der Beziehungsorientierung auf die soziale Einbindung erweisen sich dabei als abhängig von den entwicklungsbezogenen Handlungsressourcen des Individuums.

Governance of professional sports leagues—Cooperatives versus contracts

Historically, European team sports leagues were run by their respective national and international associations and were legally independent from the professional clubs playing in these leagues. Recently, European leagues have adopted an organizational form similar to their North American counterparts who are organized since their beginning in a cooperative-like manner. Based on a comparative institutional analysis, we explain the advantages of the cooperative form of league organization over contractual governance. With our four-stage game-theoretic model, we show that contractual governance of sports leagues leads to larger investment distortions than cooperative league organization.
