According to the sorting model of education, the impact of education on civic engagement is relative, rather than absolute. Education correlates with greater engagement because it is a marker of social status; the degree of status conferred by your level of education is determined by the average level of education within your environment. This article tests the sorting model by paying strict heed to its assumptions. The analysis confirms the model, but considerably narrows its reach. Sorting applies only to one particular type (electoral activity), only when the educational environment accounts for variation across age and place, and only when one models the interactive relationship between education at the individual and environmental levels. Furthermore, sorting applies more to men than women. The same analytical framework demonstrates that being in a more highly educated environment amplifies the relationship between education and democratic enlightenment (political knowledge and tolerance). 相似文献

The role of the Soviet Far East in the Soviet regional system is conditioned by its remoteness from the country's commanding center, its harsh physical environment, and strategic importance. The region is weakly integrated into the mainstream of the Soviet economy. At the same time, its most powerful economic links are with the distant metropolis—a strongly dependent, parasitic relationship made more dominant by the cost of the massive military build-up. Huge Soviet efforts to accelerate the growth of the Far East are proving largely unsuccessful, despite the construction of the BAM. Continuity and change in present-day Swedish . Eskilstuna revisited is a study of language change in real time. It replicates an earlier investigation of the social variation of Swedish in the medium-sized town of Eskilstuna using data collected 29 years after the original study. In my article, I focus on the rate of change in relation to gender. I have studied seven morphological and morphophonological variables which are sociolinguistically marked, and according to general linguistic opinion in Sweden, in the process of fairly rapid change towards the standard forms of the written language. Our data show that the rate of change at the level of the community is low. Social and age differences have decreased, whereas gender differences have increased. I discuss different explanations for the fact that women in Eskilstuna use more standard language than men, and attempt to analyse why the men still use so many local variants. 相似文献

Three thousand, three hundred and ninety-five families, whose child attended one of 80 different day or resident summer camps
for at least one week, completed customized questionnaires that measured growth from precamp to postcamp in four domains:
Positive Identity, Social Skills, Physical & Thinking Skills, and Positive Values & Spirituality. Parents, children, and camp
staff reported significant positive change in these four domains; more than would be expected by maturation alone. Most gains
were maintained or showed additional growth six months later. Few of the camp's structural elements correlated with growth,
nor did striking gender, age, or ethnicity differences emerge. The study highlights the particular strengths of camp as an
educational institution and social movement and suggests that different variations of summer camp can provide potent developmental
experiences.
Christopher A. Thurber is full-time faculty at Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New
Hampshire. He received his PhD in clinical psychology from the University of California, Los
Angeles, in 1997. His major research interests include homesickness, youth camping, and
developmental psychopathology.
Margery M. Scanlin is the Executive Officer for Research at the American Camp Association in
Martinsville, Indiana. She received her EdD from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, in
1982. Her major research interests include youth development outcomes, program improvement
in youth organizations, and organizational aspects of effective camps.
Leslie Scheuler Whitaker is a Senior Associate with Philliber Research Associates in St. Louis,
Missouri. She received her PhD in social science research from Washington University in St.
Louis in 2000. Her primary research areas include youth development, arts education, and
program evaluation.
Karla A. Henderson is a professor in the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism at North
Carolina State University. She received her PhD in education from the University of Minnesota
in 1979 and is currently a member of the American Camp Association Board of Directors. Her
research interests include leisure behavior theory, camping and outdoor education, and gender

Although there has been evidence for some time of a sex difference in depression, relatively little research has examined the developmental process by which women come to be at greater risk than men for depression. In this paper, the developmental pattern of depressed affect is examined over early and middle adolescence, with a special focus on the patterns of boys as compared to girls. In addition, a developmental model for mental health in adolescence is tested for its power in explaining the emergence of gender differences in depression. Longitudinal data on 335 adolescents randomly selected from two school districts were used to test the hypotheses. Results revealed that girls are at risk for developing depressed affect by 12th grade because they experienced more challenges in early adolescence than did boys. The sex difference in depressed affect at 12th grade disappears once early adolescent challenges are considered.This research was supported in part by grants MH30252/38142 to A. Petersen. Not only is China’s environment in decline, but China’s contribution to global environmental deterioration is significant.
Because of the global implications of China’s environmental pollution, international action is needed. Foreign trade and investment
should be encouraged to incorporate environmental concerns and technology transfer, especially in the area of energy efficiency.
Continued and enhanced international cooperation as well as loans and investment through international and regional organizations
should also contribute to improving China’s and the global environment. Finally, China should assist in this process by continuing
