The effects of presumptive parole dates on institutional behavior: A preliminary assessment

This article reports research conducted by the United States Parole Commission to examine whether the provision of greater determinacy in the setting of prison release dates, known as “presumptive parole,” affects the frequency or nature of prison disciplinary infractions or program participation. An experimental design was used in which prisoners in an eligible pool of cases were randomly allocated to experimental (early notification of a “firm” parole date) and control (traditional procedure) groups.     

Modified cobalt thiocyanate presumptive color test for ketamine hydrochloride

A new presumptive color test for ketamine hydrochloride is reported. The test is a modification of the cobalt thiocyanate test currently used for cocaine and involves basifying samples rather than acidifying them. The two-step procedure for liquids and three-step procedure for powdered samples are straightforward, definitive, and utilize reagents commonly used in forensic drug analysis. The test works on ketamine hydrochloride in both powder and liquid form and has a sensitivity of c. 1.25 mg. Performing the test with numerous other controlled substances and related chemicals demonstrates the test to be highly selective.     

The Impact of Distributive and Procedural Justice on Social Service Workers

The concepts of fairness and justice are embodied within the organizing principle of social justice. Although social justice is a primary focus of social work, social service workers are not always treated with fairness by their own employers. The results from a survey of 255 social service employees from a variety of agencies in Northwest Ohio indicate that distributive justice and procedural justice, two dimensions of organizational justice, are both significant predictors of job satisfaction and organizational commitment, with procedural justice having two to three times the impact of distributive justice.     

IRS focuses on employment status of hospital-based physicians

In view of these serious consequences and the IRS' renewed interest in hospital-based physicians, it is imperative that all hospitals examine their contractual relationships with physicians under the foregoing standards to ascertain whether any physicians are improperly being characterized as independent contractors. Of particular concern are arrangements with aspects similar to those in TAM 9443002. Hospitals operating in states that still prohibit the employment of physicians are not necessarily protected, as the IRS does not accept the corporate practice of medicine doctrine as a defense to characterization of physicians as employees for tax purposes. In those states, it is probably best to handle problematic situations through the use of professional corporations, as discussed above.
