Detection of apoptosis in ischemic heart. Usefulness in the diagnosis of early myocardial injury

Myocardial samples of hearts with histologic findings of acute myocardial infarction (group A), sudden coronary deaths without histologic changes (group B), and chronic ischemic heart disease (group C) were analyzed to investigate the appearance of apoptosis in acute and chronic ischemic cardiac disorders. This analysis involved the morphologic detection of DNA strand breaks in myocyte nuclei by the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) assay and the biochemical determination of DNA laddering in the myocardium using archival formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections of human myocardium. The authors demonstrated that apoptosis of myocardial cells could occur after ischemic myocardial cell injury. In all documented cases of acute myocardial infarction (group A), the infarcted area included extensive presence of both apoptosis and necrosis. In the tissue bordering on and away from the obviously infarcted areas, positive nuclei were intermingled with nonstained normal myocytes. The number of positive nuclei decreased with the distance from the infarction foci. In group B, myocardial samples showed focal or diffuse nuclear positivity of varying degrees for apoptosis, confirming the presence of myocardial ischemic cell death, whereas the histologic diagnosis remained inconclusive. This finding suggests that apoptosis could be used as a marker for acute ischemic injury. In group C, stained nuclei were dispersed with intermingled normal cardiomyocytes.     

The problem of stability and the ethos-based solution

Can unconditional basic income policies be designed to generate the motivational conditions that make possible their own support? Unconditional redistributive schemes do not take formal precautions to deal with potential motivational problems that may affect their stability. For example, they are designed to give people the freedom to decide whether or not to participate in the job market. However, scholars like Philippe Van Parijs and Simon Birnbaum think that the promotion of an ethos of justice can potentially do the necessary motivational work to secure the stability of unconditional redistributive institutions. Their solution lies in changing people’s behavior through an informal motivational mechanism rather than through a formal rule or institution. This paper argues against that ‘ethos-based solution.’ It presents three reasons to distrust that solution. First, it argues that even broader and more inclusive ethoi of justice can become oppressive and violate people’s freedom. Second, it suggests that the formal and informal strategies to generate that ethos may be difficult to implement, monitor, and control. Finally, it argues that the difficulties associated with implementing and developing that ethos of justice may lead us to either preserve an undesirable status quo or to implement suboptimal redistributive policies.

Population genetic analysis of 15 STR loci of Chinese Tu ethnic minority group

We studied and established a DNA database of 15 euchromosome STRs (D8S1179, D21S11, D7S820, CSF1PO, D3S1358, TH01, D13S317, D16S539, D2S1338, D19S433, vWA, TPOX, D18S51, D5S818 and FGA) in a population sample of 151 unrelated individuals of Tu ethnic minority group. Allelic frequencies and statistical parameters of Tu population were calculated. Totally 136 alleles were observed, with the corresponding allelic frequencies ranging from 0.0033 to 0.5359. Chi-square test showed that all STR loci agreed with Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Our study population data were compared with the previously publishing population data of other ethnic groups or areas. Our results of present study were valuable for human identification and paternity tests in Chinese Tu population.     

Characterization of lesions in hanging deaths

Hanging is a common method of committing suicide and a routine task in medico-legal autopsies. The hanging mark is the most relevant external sign and its characteristics are well known, but, for unknown reasons, there are major differences in reports on internal findings. We retrospectively studied 228 consecutive cases of hanging deaths. A complete standard autopsy was performed for every case. We investigated the association between the characteristics of the hanging mark and the frequency of bone, cartilage, soft tissue, and vascular injuries with the mode of suspension. Most cases (75.3%) presented some kind of bone or cartilage fracture, but these were unrelated to any of the variables studied. Vascular lesions are clearly more infrequent: intimal injuries were found in the carotid artery (9.1%), the jugular vein (2.2%), and ruptures of the carotid adventitial layer (21.7%). These could be partially associated with the use of a hard fixed noose and body weight.     

我国传染病防治领域公民权利保护的立法进展与思考

2003年以来,我国传染病防治领域公民权利保护的法制建设取得了较大进展,生命权、健康权的维护不断强化,人身自由权的限制及其生活保障更加人性化,财产权的政府处置权力与补偿义务逐渐对等化,知情权的运用逐步制度化、个体化,受救助权的实现形式日益多元化,隐私权的规定越来越具体化,不受歧视权的保护范围适度细化。但是,为了进一步完善传染病防治领域的公民权利保护,建议：加快公民权利保护均等化的立法步伐,关注公民权利保护的法律法规可操作性,提高公民维护自身权利的法律意识,汲取国外依法保护公民权利的有益经验。     

“They Tried to Bury Us”: Scholar Advocacy in the Wake of the DACA Rescission

On September 5, 2017, the Trump Administration announced that it would rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Initiated in 2012 via an Executive Order, DACA sought to provide a provisional fix to the legal status of the nation’s growing number of “Dreamers” – the approximately 1.2 million young adults who have lived the majority of their lives in the United States, but were brought into the country without proper entry documentation. The termination of DACA has presented unique challenges for the 241,000 Dreamers currently enrolled in US colleges and universities. While several institutions proudly declared themselves to be “sanctuary campuses,” this paper focuses on a restrained if not conservative, land-grant university, detailing how two faculty members incorporated scholar-activist and community organizing strategies to support a Dreamer-driven institutional response.

The Image is the Message: Instagram Marketing and the 2016 Presidential Primary Season

The 2016 presidential primary candidates expanded their social media marketing campaigns to include the image- and video-centered social network platform Instagram. To explore the role that images play in framing political character development and to identify which images received higher levels of engagement, content analyses were performed on the top seven primary candidates’ Instagram accounts. Results indicate that candidates most frequently employ the ideal candidate frame in their images, which also garnered the highest number of user likes and comments. Results also reveal that among Instagram image attributes, candidates frequently and successfully used text within their images, but filters were inconsistently applied across the candidates.
