Fatal colchicine poisoning by accidental ingestion of meadow saffron-case report

A 62-year-old male died of colchicine poisoning after accidental ingestion of Colchicum autumnale (meadow saffron). He ate a salad of plant with green leaves regarded as wild garlic (Allium ursinum). A few hours later he developed symptoms of gastroenteritis and was admitted to hospital. In spite of gastric lavage, activated charcoal and supportive measures, multi-organ system failure developed over the next two days. Laboratory analysis showed highly elevated blood concentrations of hepatic enzymes, creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase and blood urea nitrogen, as well as leukocytopenia and thrombocytopenia. Mechanical ventilation, dopamine, noradrenaline, crystalloid solutions and fresh frozen plasma were applied but despite treatment the patient died five days after the ingestion. Post-mortem examination revealed hepatic centrilobular necrosis, nephrotoxic acute tubular necrosis, petechial bleeding in fatty tissue, blunt and shortened intestinal villi and cerebral toxic edema. Botanical identification of incriminated plant gave Colchicum autumnale which confirmed colchicine poisoning. Although the accidental ingestion of Colchicum autumnale is rare and to our knowledge only five such cases have been described in detail, this is the second fatal case in Croatia described in the last 3 years.     

When Loving Means Hurting: An Exploration of Attachment and Intimate Abuse In a Community Sample

Intimate relationship abuse can be understood by considering two critical tenets of attachment. First, attachment fulfills a basic need for survival. Thus, the tenacity of the attachment bond is independent of relationship quality. Second, individuals whose attachment needs have been frustrated may strike out violently to regain proximity to the perceived loss of an intimate partner. We examined how individual differences in attachment were associated with women's and men's relationship abuse. A telephone survey assessed levels of psychological and physical abuse in 1249 Vancouver residents. Of these, 128 completed an attachment interview exploring their interpersonal relationships. Hierarchical regressions revealed that attachment variables contributed significant variance to prediction of both receipt and perpetration of psychological and physical abuse, with preoccupied attachment acting as an independent predictor. There was no evidence that gender moderated these associations. The findings suggest that attachment preoccupation in either partner may increase likelihood of abuse in couples.     

Zur Politisierung der Europäischen Union

The constitutional treaty of the EU failed. Why so? Does this failure indicate the end of European integration and the beginning of re-nationalization of European politics? This contribution argues that the failure of the constitutional treaty is due to a process of politicization of the EU. As a result, political processes beyond the nation state are judged increasingly not just on the basis of their effectiveness, but also in terms of the criteria for good political order, such as fairness and legitimacy. The respective governments of the EU member states, however, publicly still take an instrumental approach to the EU. This is doomed to failure and thus the future of the European project is open. Either politics adapts to the new evaluation criteria for European integration or a partial re-nationalization of European politics is indeed likely.     

家兔死后眼玻璃体液消光度与死亡时间关系研究

目的 为寻找一种精确推定死亡时间的方法。方法 应用 754分光光度计,在 420nm波长下,检测了 48只家兔死后不同时间的眼玻璃体液消光度,探讨其与死亡时间的关系。结果 眼玻璃体液消光度（ X）与死亡时间（ Y）呈线性正相关（ r=0.983 27, P< 0.05）,在死后 0～ 72小时,眼玻璃体液消光度与死亡时间存在回归关系（ F=116.54, P< 0.05）,直线回归方程为： Y = 453.30X＋ 0.75 [Y为死亡时间 (PMI),单位为小时; X为眼玻璃体液消光度 ]。结论眼玻璃体液消光度的测定可作为推断死后 72小时内死亡时间的参考指标之一。     

PCR－RFLP技术鉴定ABO基因型的法医学应用研究

目的建立PCR－RFLP、非变性PAG胶垂直电泳和银染技术进行ABO基因分型的方法体系,并对200名广东汉族人群ABO基因型频率进行了调查。方法用Chelex－100和酚、氯仿抽提法处理样本,PCR扩增后用非变性聚丙烯酰胺凝胶垂直电泳和银染技术检测分型。结果ABO位点特异性扩增片段长度为175bp～210bp,6种基因型频率分布为0.0250～0.4300,杂合度H值为0.5162,个体识别力DP值为0.7111。结论该方法可成功运用于血液、血痕、精斑、毛发、骨组织和混合斑等检材的个体识别及亲权鉴定的检验。     

Study on expression of the glycoprotein in myocardial cell membrane of the rat's early myocardial ischemic

OBJECTIVE: To explore expression of the glycoprotein in early myocardial ischemic. METHODS: The glycoprotein changes occurred at the early acute cardiac ischemic area induced experimentally by ligation of left coronary artery of 32 SD rats. 6 lectins were measured by means of immunohistochemical methods. RESULTS: Positive staining of PNA could be observed in ischemic area at 5 min after ischemia, and the positive area increased with the prolongation of ischemic period. It became the strongest for 2 h and then decreased. CONCLUSION: This experiment proved that myocardial cell membrane in ischemia expressed D-galactose. This may be of some value in forensic medicine practice.     

甲基苯丙胺在豚鼠毛发中分布及转化的初步研究

目的对甲基苯丙胺在豚鼠毛发中分布及转化机制进行初步研究。方法利用GC/MS,GC/NPD法,测定单次及多次给药豚鼠毛发中MAP、AP的含量变化过程,考察给药剂量与毛发中MAP、AP的含量间的关系,并研究毛发颜色对染毒豚鼠毛发中MAP、AP含量的影响。结果单次及多次给药豚鼠毛发中代谢产物AP均高于原体MAP,给药时间及给药剂量与毛发中MAP、AP的含量显著相关,同体豚鼠黑色毛发中的MAP、AP含量均明显高于棕色、白色毛发。结论给药方式、给药剂量及毛发颜色对豚鼠毛发中MAP、AP的含量均有显著影响。
