Practical use of the molecular-genetic technologies in solving the tasks of forensic medical identification of remains in emergencies with huge human death toll

Previously, we have developed different variants, for the expert use, of information technologies, i.e. of computer automated analytical systems, to ensure an effective analysis of huge bulwarks of molecular-genetic expert findings. The results obtained in the above research significantly advanced the possibilities of expert evaluation related with personality identification under the conditions of a big death toll; they also cleaned the ground for the introduction of such methodological approaches in the practice of investigations of emergency accidents involving huge death tolls. Described within the present case study is a practical experience of forensic medical identification of unrecognized remains in air crashes with huge human death tolls implemented through computer-assisted complex molecular-genetic tests on the basis of indirect DNA identification involving the establishment of blood relationship.     

The morphological characteristics of chronic subdural hematomas

Preparations of chronic subdural hematomas (CSH) obtained during surgery from 29 patients aged 19-50 years are studied. Histological sections were stained with hematoxylin-eosin after van Gieson. Morphological criteria of CSH variants are defined, permitting forensic medical experts to make well-based conclusions on the nature (traumatic or not) of CSH (two types of capsules) and the time when it occurred.     

Forensic medical evaluation of the morphological alterations of the liver in drug abuse

Application of a morphometric method for investigation of chronic virus hepatitis in drug addicts and persons rejecting drug abuse is described. Chronic hepatitis in narcomania runs with frequent formation of lymphoid follicules in the portal tracts, relatively inactive portal hepatitis in marked lobular component of inflammation, pronounced fibrosis and early formation of micronodular hepatic cirrhosis, proliferation of biliary ducts, high neutrophil, eosinophil and macrophage content in the infiltrate, accumulation of macrophages in the portal tracts by granuloma type. These criteria are recommended for diagnosis of narcomania by morphological findings.     

The specificity of healing of fractures in the skull base

On the basis of actual observations we elucidated the main processes occurring in the reparation of fractures in the skull base. The specificity of reparation was shown to be conditioned by the structure of base bones and of surrounding tissues as well as by the nature of blood supply to them. Criteria are suggested for the determination if the lesions were inflicted in life time and when.     

Analysis of forensic-medical expert conclusions on rap and concealed rape (data from anonymous questionnaires)

Specific features of modern cases of raping are analyzed on the basis of the data of forensic medical obstetrical and gynecological expert evaluations carried out in the Primorye territory. Age and risk groups are defined, health status of victims is characterized, and specific injuries of the body and genitals are described. Specific features of concealed sexual violations in Vladivostok are defined and the need in creation of rehabilitation centers for victims of raping is discussed.
