HAVING entered the penultimate of Shakespeare’s seven ages of man,or in my case,woman,I find that hitting 60 and official old age sparks a general reevaluation of what constitutes enjoyment and a sense of well-being.The saying you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone truly hits home with the realization that life without physical fitness is a weary,worrisome trudge.Consequently good health,along with gray hair in recession,     

SEARCHING FOR AUTHENTICITY? UNDERSTANDING REPRESENTATION IN NETWORK GOVERNANCE: THE CASE OF FAITH ENGAGEMENT

With the growth of network governance, non‐electoral forms of representation are of increasing significance. The claims of non‐elected representatives are potentially more specific, explicit, and flexible than those of their elected counterparts. The quality of such claims can be assessed in relation to ‘authenticity’, rather than traditional criteria of authorization or accountability. These propositions are explored through first‐hand accounts of ‘faith representatives’ involved in a variety of English urban governance partnerships. Representatives' claims expressed an aspiration to authenticity (which was not necessarily realized) in the sense of seeking ongoing and substantive consent from constituents, rather than assuming consent via a formalized and symbolic moment of election. Network governance may be best served by a mix of elected and non‐elected representation, based upon an understanding of their complementary characteristics and of representation itself as a relational and emergent property.     

South-West Africa

Our Vice-Chairman has recently visited South Africa, includingthe mandated Territory, and this article represents the greaterpart of a lecture to a combined meeting at the Royal EmpireSociety, with our President, the Earl of Athlone presiding.     

Nigeria

The late Governor gave this address at a joint meeting withthe Royal Empire Society on the 28th January, when Lord Haileywas in the chair, in place of Lord Swinton, who was preventedfrom presiding.     

I. A LIBERAL VIEWPOINT

In anticipation of an early General Election, speakers fromthe three main parties were asked to give their views on Africanadministration at combined meetings of the Royal African andRoyal Empire Societies. The invitation was accepted by LordRennell, who spoke for Liberal opinion on the 28th March, andby Mr. Creech Jones, M.P.,for Labour on the 25th April. ColonelPonsonby, M.P., concluded the survey for the Conservatives onthe 30th May.
