The Combur Test is a ready-made and easy-to-use pretest for blood. It is based on the oxidation of tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), which is catalysed by haemoglobin and its derivatives. Despite its high sensitivity, there are many known substances which are responsible for false positive and false negative test results. The Sugar Protocol, laid down in the Convention of Lome, has been an established instrument of commodity policy for nearly 20 years. Its basic rule is that the EC imports at guaranteed prices specified quantities of sugar from ACP countries. It is the objective of the article to provide an economic evaluation of the Sugar Protocol. Impacts on prices, trade, export earnings and economic welfare are elaborated. The Sugar Protocol's impacts on the level and instabilty of sugar export earnings are jointly evaluated by computing transfer and risk benefits along the lines of Newbery/Stiglitz. A major conclusion is that the policy has to be evaluated differently from the donor's and the recipient's point of view. The Sugar Protocol induces international income transfers that are untargeted in terms of per capita income. It causes, however, rather strong risk benefits compared with other instruments of international commodity policy and sizeable welfare gains for individual recipient countries. 相似文献

In 2002 Taiwan became a member of the World Trade Organization. Although its accession process was guided by pragmatism, once it had entered the trade body sovereignty concerns came to the fore. This article analyses the relationship in the Taiwan–China–EU triangle during Taiwan’s accession to and membership of the WTO. While Taiwan is now more ready to use the WTO as a platform in its quest for international status, the behaviour patterns of the EU and China have largely remained static. The EU is interested in the economic benefits of improved relations with Taiwan, but avoids getting involved in the sovereignty conflict. China, meanwhile, tries to prevent a status gain by Taiwan in the international community. 相似文献

This paper exhibits tests of the random walk hypothesis and market efficiency for seven Asian emerging markets as a result
of the influence of financial market integration. Random walk properties of equity prices influence the return dynamic and
determine the trade strategies of investors. To examine the stochastic properties of local index returns and to test the hypothesis
that stock market prices follow a random walk, the single variance ratio tests of Lo and MacKinlay, as well as the multiple
variance ratio test of Chow and Denning are employed. The multiple statistical comparison of variance ratios is based on the
Studentized Maximum Modulus distribution with control of the joint-test’s size. The weak-form market efficiency is also tested
directly, using a nonparametric runs test. These tests are particularly useful for investigating stock prices the returns
of which are frequently not distributed normally. Documented evidence shows that, from the perspective of local investors,
weekly stock prices in major Asian emerging markets do not follow a random walk in the pre-liberalization period. However,
in the post-liberalization period the weak-form efficiency hypothesis is generally adopted at the 5% level except for the
smaller stock markets of Indonesia and Thailand. These empirical findings suggest that financial integration affects the return
predictability in such a way that domestic investors might not be able to develop trading strategies allowing them to earn

We propose an alternativeto the Constitutional Treaty drafted by theEuropean Convention. Our proposaleffectively limits the domain of governmentat the Union level.
