Policing Schools: Examining the Impact of Place Management Activities on School Violence

The present study examines whether the presence of school resource officers (SROs) and their level of involvement in place management activities are associated with higher or lower rates of school-based serious violence. This study uses data from the 2010 School Survey on Crime and Safety (SSOCS) conducted by National Center for Educational Statistics. Propensity score matching is used to create a quasi-experimental design and isolate the influence of SROs and their level of involvement in place management activities on school-based serious violence. The analysis reveals that schools with a school resource officer are associated with higher rates of reported serious violence and those schools with SROs that participate in more place manager duties are also associated with higher rates of reported serious violence. These findings do not support the notion that SROs are acting as effective place managers and through this place management, reducing reported serious violence. Rather, it appears that the presences of a SRO and their execution of place manager duties is associated with an increase in the reporting of serious violence. Policy implications and limitations of the current research are also discussed.

‘Making it your own world’: Women's studies and freire

This paper presents an analysis of ten interviews with teachers of women's studies in some institutions of adult education. Most of the interviews took place in Scotland because the paper is taken from a wider investigation into the provision of women's studies in the sphere of adult education generally, and submitted in part requirement for the Diploma in Adult Education to Glasgow University. The paper concludes by focusing specifically on some of the remarks and recommendations made in The Alexander Report—Adult Education: The Challenge of Change, HMSO 1975, interweaving these into a Feminist and Freirian perspective.

Kentuckian’s Attitudes on Capital Punishment, 1989–2016

Citizens’ attitudes toward the death penalty have been effected by the availability of life without parole (LWOP). Our analysis focuses upon data from a representative sample of Kentuckians on death penalty attitudes. The factors influencing and related to death penalty support and compared to support for LWOP are considered along with a review of Kentucky survey findings from 1989–2016. The results reveal consistent support for LWOP over the death penalty. Male Kentucky residents with a college education were most likely to support life without parole over capital punishment while male conservatives did not.     

Size and growth in federal executive agencies

Concepts of size and growth have presented a number of problems to organization theorists in a variety of disciplines. Of primary concern is the method by which such concepts are operationalized. Utilizing personnel and budgetary data from a sample of seventy-three federal executive agencies, the effect of size on administrative hierarchy is examined. It is hypothesized that -- as agencies increase in size -- a larger proportion of this increase will be middle-grade and upper-grade Personnel. Coversely, the amount of personnel in lower-level positions will exhibit a decreasing rate of growth.

As a means of specifying the phenomenon of growth, the pattern of agency growth over a twenty-nine year span of time (1948-1976) is examined. The effect of appropriations growth on personnel growth is posited to operate in a positive manner.

Methods of analysis utilized include scatterplot analysis to provide a profile of federal executive agencies. Correlation and simple regression analysis serve as tests of the primary hypotheses.
