Conscious policy and program support for the resettlement of refugees in regional and rural areas is a relatively recent trend in Australia. Resettlement is a complex process that hinges on the establishment of viable communities. This review suggests that its outcomes, especially for refugee communities, are potentially mixed. However, an appropriately resourced, well managed and well planned refugee resettlement program can potentially provide beneficial outcomes for refugees and host communities. This article draws on existing empirical data and contributions made at a VicHealth Roundtable in late 2007 to thematically explore the challenges facing rural and regional resettlement programs. Given that settlement is a dynamic process and the approaches to rural and regional settlement are evolving, this article provides 12 propositions for a more effective and integrated approach to policy and practice. 相似文献

Although adolescents often participate in multiple extracurricular activities, little research has examined how the breadth
of activities in which an adolescent is involved relates to school-related affect and academic performance. Relying on a large,
multi-ethnic sample (N = 864; 55.9% female), the current study investigated linear and non-linear relationships of 11th grade activity participation
in four activity domains (academic/leadership groups, arts activities, clubs, and sports) to adolescents’ sense of belonging
at school, academic engagement, and grade point average, contemporarily and in 12th grade. Results of multiple regression
models revealed curvilinear relationships for sense of belonging at school in 11th and 12th grade, grade point average in
11th grade, and academic engagement in 12th grade. Adolescents who were moderately involved (i.e., in two domains) reported
a greater sense of belonging at school in 11th and 12th grade, a higher grade point average in 11th grade, and greater academic
engagement in 12th grade, relative to those who were more or less involved. Furthermore, adolescents’ sense of belonging at
school in 11th grade mediated the relationship of domain participation in 11th grade to academic engagement in 12th grade.
This study suggests that involvement in a moderate number of activity domains promotes positive school-related affect and
greater academic performance. School policy implications and recommendations are discussed. 相似文献

Both leadership and public value are increasingly seen as concepts highly relevant to public administration, not only because of complex societal challenges but also as ways to address pluralistic interests in society. This article explores in detail the varied conceptualizations of public value and of public leadership. Furthermore, we argue that political astuteness provides an important conceptual linkage between leadership and public value, enabling actors to read, understand and foster coalitions around diverse and sometimes competing interests. In this introduction to the symposium, we analyse the different conceptualizations of public value, of leadership, and also show how the six articles explicitly or implicitly draw on the linking concept of political astuteness. In the context of the ongoing international debate concerning the efficacy or otherwise of the NPT and IAEA in preventing or managing nuclear proliferation, Australia's undertaking to enter a nuclear cooperation agreement with the People's Republic of China (PRC), once identified as a “strategic competitor” of Australia's major alliance partner the United States (US), suggests that Australia's approach to proliferation issues is being re-evaluated. This paper argues, utilising an analysis of the relationship between the evolving US approach to nuclear issues and Australian policy, that the Howard government's evolving approach to nuclear issues can be characterised as an attempt to balance the competing imperatives of maintaining Australia's reputation as a nuclear non-proliferation standard bearer, regional strategic and economic considerations and the weight of the Australia-US alliance. 相似文献
