Possible common partial antigens in human Ig allotype structure and ubiquitous bacteria, studied with the example of Escherichia coli

As can be learned from the literature, bovine serum may contain antibodies directed against human immunoglobulin allotypes. This gave rise to the question of what the origin of those antibodies is. We tested bacteria (E. coli) by means of the haemagglutination inhibition assay, which is used to type either Gm or Km factors. Anti-G1m(2) and anti-G3m(10)-specific antibodies were inhibited by the bacteria in a clear-cut manner, as was anti-Km(1), albeit less significantly. In contrast, the bacteria tested almost totally failed to inhibit anti-G3m(21) serum. The results lead to the assumption that E. coli may carry both Gm- and Km-like antigenic structures, which are presumably the antigenic material leading to immunization of cattle. Furthermore, new attention is drawn to a mechanism for immunization which is discussed regarding the genesis of either AB0 isoagglutinins in man or other "naturally occurring" antibodies.

Forensic medical estimation of acute blood loss based on morphologic and functional changes in the internal organs

The objective of the present work was to obtain histological and morphometric characteristics of internal organs available for forensic medical examination from 236 corpses of subjects aged between 23 to 48 years whose death was caused by acute blood loss following a mechanical injury and concomitant alcohol or drug intoxication. Diagnostic signs of acute blood loss have been identified that can be used by forensic medical experts to estimate the length of the terminal period and reveal characteristic features of blood loss associated with alcohol and drug intoxication.     

The methodological basis of expert assessment of unfavourable outcomes of the stomatological treatment in the framework of civil law proceedings

The authors discuss peculiarities of the performance of forensic medical expertise in the cases of unfavourable outcomes of the stomatological treatment. The methodological basis of expert assessment has been created to be applied in situations related to the unfavourable outcomes of dental care.     

The detection of nifedipine in biological materials

The objective of the present study was to find optimal conditions for the isolation of nifedipine from biological materials by ethylacetate. It was shown that nifedipine can be purified from co-extracted substances of the biological material on a Silasorb C-18 column with the size of the particles 30 microns. The authors propose to use thin-layer chromatography, IR spectrophotometry, and reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography for the identification and quantitative determination of nifedipine extracted from cadaveric liver samples.     

Typing of mitochondrial DNA from isolated cells of the human buccal epithelium

The authors have developed a method for molecular-genetic analysis of DNA from isolated cells for the purpose of forensic medical diagnostics. The method is based on the use of the laser capture microdissection (LCM) technology in combination with typing of mitochondrial DNA. Optimization of the conditions for amplification of polymorphic mtDNA loci in preparations containing minimal amounts of the genetic material was accomplished at the initial stage of the work. To this effect, the two-round polymerase chain reaction was employed that allowed the amplified material to be accumulated in the amount sufficient for sequenation. At the next stages, the system thus obtained was tested on the cell model (using isolated cells of human buccal epithelium). It was shown that the proposed method is suitable for the analysis of specific mtDNA characteristics in a single human cell.     

Anna Mikhaĭlovna Smyslova--the first Russian woman forensic medical expert

This article describes in brief the life and the work of the first Russian female forensic medical expert, Anna Mikhailovna Smyslova, based on the analysis of the materials available from the Central State Historical Archive, Sankt-Peterburg, and a number of publications in the-prerevolutionary editions.
