Mechanismen institutionellen Wandels im deutschen Kapitalismus

In the debate on the convergence of Rhenish capitalism towards the Anglo-Saxon model there is a growing consensus on the emergence of hybrid institutional configurations which combine elements of both systems. Our paper traces the mechanisms and driving forces leading to varying degrees of convergence with Anglo-Saxon standards and institutions by comparing the changes in two areas of German corporate governance regulation, namely internal corporate governance and accounting. Whereas existing institutions were coupled with Anglo-Saxon elements in the case of internal corporate governance (?layering“), traditional standards and institutions were substituted for new ones in the case of accounting (?displacement“). We argue that the varying degree of convergence can be explained by the different preferences of key national actors, such as companies and trade unions, in the two cases and the varying exogenous pressures for reforms. Our study highlights the importance of a meso-level analysis of causal mechanisms for the explanation of institutional change in modern capitalism.

Setting the agenda: Electoral competition,commitment of policy,and issue salience

By committing policy, an incumbent in effect disowns an issue; when she maintains policy flexibility, the issue remains electorally salient. Electoral competition shapes political commitment decisions and collapses the multi-dimensional issue space into a low-dimensional space of electorally salient issues.     

Population data for MiniNC01 in a population sample from North-eastern Italy and their use in neoplastic tissues fixed in formalin and embedded in paraffin

To establish a database for the three MiniNC01 loci D10S1248, D14S1434, D22S1045 in a population sample from North-eastern Italy, 102 unrelated individuals were typed. DNA was amplified in a multiplex reaction with subsequent automatic detection using capillary electrophoresis. The obtained data give a contribution to the definition of Italian population miniSTRs allele frequencies for the three analysed loci. These three MiniSTRs were tested on 21 neoplastic tissues and the obtained genotypes were compared to those obtained from normal tissue. Only 3 cases (14.28%) gave a different genotype suggesting a better performance of these markers than traditional STRs.

Dieser Artikel präsentiert Ergebnisse einer qualitativen Untersuchung deutschsprachiger Ratgeberliteratur zu Sterben, Tod und Trauer. Vor dem Hintergrund eines allgemeinen Beratungsbooms widmet sich der Aufsatz der Frage, welche Funktion Beratung, speziell die Beratung zum Tode, in der modernen Gesellschaft haben kann. Beratung wird alsKommunikative Gattung definiert, die in erster Linie auf das Problem der ?fragilen Anschlussfähigkeit“ — insbesondere bei schriftlichen Ratgebern — verweist. Eine Auswertung der Ratgeberliteratur zum Thema Tod zeigt, dass man anhand der Textedrei typische Problemhorizonte unterscheiden kann, in denen der Tod platziert wird. Die Bedeutung des Todes lässt sich somit nur im Hinblick auf die Erwartungsstrukturen erschließen, die in den Texten typischerweise konstruiert werden. Tod kann dann verstanden werden erstens als Abschied vom Leben, zweitens als bedeutungsloser Zwischenfall oder drittens als gleiches Schicksal für alle. Dieser Typologie entsprechen drei unterschiedliche Kontexturen. Damit bestätigt sich die Vermutung, dass die moderne Gesellschaft keinears moriendi mehr kennt. Stattdessen finden sich kommunikative ?Räume“, innerhalb derer das Unsagbare sagbar gemacht werden kann.     

The challenges of measuring food security and sovereignty in the Yucatán Peninsula

In a study of food security and sovereignty (FSS) in 22 indigenous Mayan communities in Yucatán State, Mexico, a participatory action research (PAR) methodology was combined with an analytical framework comprised of 10 FSS indicators to measure food security in the study area and identify strengths and weaknesses of the analytical framework. While some of the FSS indicators were approaching satisfactory, the majority were only partially satisfied, and food self-sufficiency was for the most part unsatisfactory. It was also found that food security indicators are relatively easier to measure, while sovereignty indicators present challenges in terms of defining progress.
