Sequence variation of new alleles at the short tandem repeat D19S253 locus

This paper reports the sequences of two new alleles identified in a population database study on the short tandem repeat D19S253 locus. A Portuguese Caucasian population and a Portuguese African population were studied. Forty-four selected alleles were sequenced and 11 different alleles were found. All the sequenced alleles shown to possess a simple tetranucleotide GATA repeat region structure. The two new alleles, alleles 6 and 16, follow the simple repeat pattern. During paternity investigation casework, 1028 meiosis were analyzed and five isolated genetic incompatibilities detected. In one case, a non-detectable allele with the used set of primers could be the explanation. In the other four cases, single-step mutations could be considered. The mutation rate obtained for this locus was 3.89 x 10(-3).     

A vindication of the rights of girls: surviving girlhood in the 21st century

ABSTRACT

Between 2014 to 2016 we conducted mixed-methods research exploring girls’ experiences of growing up in the UK in the 21st century. We spoke to girls and young women between the ages of 10 and 24 in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to gain a qualitative snapshot of what matters to girls. We also conducted the first quantitative study of a range of quality of life indicators disaggregated by age and gender in the UK to garner a statistical view of geographically-based experiences of growing up girl. The study was commissioned by Plan International UK and The State of Girls’ Rights report was launched in September 2016. What struck us at the time of writing the report was the resonance between challenges girls raised in 2016 and those proclaimed by Wollstonecraft in her 1792 treatise, A Vindication of the Rights of Woman published over 200 years earlier. Here we bring together these voices from the 18th and 21st centuries to consider the continuing legacy and resonance of Wollstonecraft’s ideas in thinking about growing up girl in Britain.     

Bullying and sexual harassment among Brazilian high school students

Bullying and sexual harassment at school have received recent attention in developed countries; however, they have been neglected in Latin America. Thus, the authors investigated these phenomena among 400 Brazilian high school students from two high schools (one private and one public). Analyses using t-tests showed that boys bullied and sexually harassed their peers more often than girls did. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses showed that boys and girls who scored high on general misconduct bullied their peers more often than those who scored low on general misconduct. Boys who believed they would be punished by their teachers for bullying and who scored low on benevolent sexism bullied more often than boys who believed they would not be punished by their teachers and who scored high on benevolent sexism. Moreover, bullying predicted peer sexual harassment for boys and girls. Recommendations to prevent bullying and sexual harassment are offered.
