Scholars such as Durkheim and Chodorow have argued that the social strains contributing to suicide vary by sex. Specifically, it has been asserted that women relative to men either do not respond to social strain with suicide, or respond to relational but not status strains. Conversely, others assert that process differences never existed, or at the least have dissipated with increasing equality between the subgroups. Neither side has offered convincing empirical evidence for their position. This study examines social strains contributing to suicidal behavior among adolescents, by sex, to address this debate. Results clearly support the presence of process differences and delineate the specific nature of these differences. Generally, males and females are responsive to both status and relational strains. However, theoretical models suggesting males are more status oriented whereas females are more relationally dependent are supported. Results hold theoretical and interventionist implications for the contextual nature of suicide among adolescents.  相似文献

This paper uses a model developed by Brams and Doherty (1993) to examine negotiations among a country of origin, a country of asylum, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in a refugee crisis. A unique feature of the paper is its treatment of the country of asylum as a separate player in the negotiations, which makes the choice to permit or deny settlement in the asylum country endogenous.
The model is applied to two groups of Rwandese refugees: Tutsis living in exile in Burundi for three decades and Hutus in Zaire during the 1990s. The contrasting circumstances surrounding these two refugee crises provide an opportunity to study asylum countries that were sympathetic and unsympathetic, and to model changing attitudes in the country of origin and the international community toward the refugees. For both crises, the predictions of the model are broadly consistent with the unfolding of the negotiation process and the opportunities that eventually became available to the refugees.  相似文献

This is a study of perceptions of the procedural justice of a business regulatory process among 341 Australian chief executives of small organizations. Only mixed support is found for the notion that procedural justice perceived by chief executives explains changes in the compliance of the organizations they run. A factor analysis suggests that five facets of procedural justice—consistency, correctability, control, impartiality, and ethicality—can be combined to form a single measure. The decision accuracy facet was not part of the general procedural justice factor. It is just one of these facets, control, that is significantly associated with changing compliance. As the chief executive's perception that they have had some control over the enforcement process increases, organizational compliance improves. The procedural justice measures correlate more strongly with regulatee satisfaction for this regulatory regime than do regulatory outcomes.  相似文献
