Genetic profile of the Madeira Archipelago population using the new PowerPlex16 System kit

Allele and haplotype frequencies of 17 chromosome STR loci, 15 of them included in the kit PowerPlex 16 System from Promega, were determined in a sample of unrelated males from Madeira and Porto Santo Islands. PowerPlex 16 includes STRs not studied before in the Madeira population. The-kit includes two new allele markers (Penta D and Penta E), which proved to be extremely useful for paternity testing (PD = 0.952 and 0.977, respectively). The study revealed that the Madeira population does not differ from that of the north Portugal. Nevertheless, some loci presented alleles found in sub-Saharan and North European populations which were not reported so far in Portugal.

Allele and haplotype frequencies for nine Y-specific STR loci (DYS19, DYS389-I, DYS389-II, DYS390, DYS391, DYS393, DYS434, DYS437, and DYS439) were obtained from a sample of 57 males from Guinea Equatorial.     

Civil Disobedience and Test Cases

Abstract.  This paper aims to approach the subject of civil disobedience from the triple perspective of the ethical, the legal, and the political. The novelty of our focus resides in the priority given to the legal aspect of civil disobedience, especially to the possible legal justification of civil disobedience, a perspective that is generally overlooked in analysing the phenomenon. This is where the Achilles heel is to be found, though it may provide unexploited insights into the issue from which significant conclusions can be drawn.     

Trade Liberalization and Peripheral Postindustrialization in the Caribbean

In the 1990s, trade liberalization eroded the competitiveness of Caribbean economies as manufacturing export platforms. Proposed new economic strategies favored a shift from vertically integrated, transnationally based segment manufacturing to segments of knowledge-intensive industries and services. This strategy, however, reproduces the economic asymmetries associated with the core-periphery relation (low wages, value-added rates). Postindustrial technologies and economic strategies provide the opportunity to formulate alternative policies to overcome the shortcomings of peripheral postindustrialization and foster sustainable postindustrial development.

Metric determination of sex from the humerus in a Guatemalan forensic sample

The absence of population-specific standards for sex, age and stature estimation for rural Guatemala is problematic for the forensic analysis of skeletal remains recovered from clandestine graves attributed to the recent armed conflict in that country. In order to increase the reliability of the forensic analyses being undertaken in Guatemala, standards for metric determination of sex were developed. Data was collected on several bones; the results for the humerus are presented here. A sample of 118 complete humeri (68 male and 50 female) was studied; maximum length, maximum diameter of the head, circumference at midshaft, maximum diameter at midshaft, minimum diameter at midshaft and epicondylar breadth were measured and subjected to discriminant function analysis. The classification accuracies for the univariate functions range from 76.8% for the maximum diameter at midshaft to 95.5% for the maximum diameter of the head. The classification accuracy for the stepwise procedure was 98.2%.
