The processing of the results of chemical toxicological research using microcalculators

Three programs for computer microcalculators "Elektronika MK-52", "Elektronika MK-54", "Elektronika MK-56", "Elektronika MK-61", and "Elektronika BZ-34" were studied. The first program allows one to calculate degree of substance extraction and rate of its distribution between two liquid unmixing phases; the second program is used for calculations on substance distribution in the organs of laboratory animals; the third program helps to calculate specific and molar rates of light absorption. Programs may be used in mathematical processing of results obtained in scientific research.     

President Roosevelt,Admiral Stark,and the Unsent Warning to Pearl Harbor: A Research Note

Admiral Harold R. Stark (1880–1972) was appointed Chief of Naval Operations in August 1939 and served in that role until removed in March 1942. It was on his watch that the Japanese raided Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941. Nowadays the prevailing view of Stark seems to be largely shaped by the official verdict of the Secretary of the Navy, James V. Forrestal, namely that “Admiral Harold R. Stark, USN (Retired), shall not hold any position in the United States Navy which requires the exercise of superior judgment”. Our very different view is that Stark was a patriot who willingly sacrificed his reputation to preserve that of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and to enable him, as the one person capable of leading the Allies to victory in war against Nazi Germany, to assume his proper mantle.     

Dissecting the Finnish male uniformity: The value of additional Y-STR loci

The forensic use of Y-chromosomal markers can be hampered by reduced diversity and geographical subdivision in some populations. In Finland both of these confounding factors are well documented, but it is also shown that increase of data could resolve or at least alleviate these problems. In order to increase the forensic usability of Y-chromosomal data in Finland, we have here evaluated the diversity at a number of additional Y-STRs. A seven Y-STR locus panel (“FY7”: DYS449, DYS460, DYS505, DYS522, DYS576, DYS612 and DYS627) was found to reveal higher diversity levels among Finns than the substantially larger commercial multiplexes commonly in use. The Y-STR data augmented with the FY7 panel shows substantially higher discrimination capacity and lower levels of geographical structure among Finns. Amplifiable in one multiplex, this set of loci offers an informative and easy-to-use supplementary for the commercial Y-STR kits.     

Export processing zones and corporate environmental performance in emerging economies: The case of the oil,gas, and chemical sectors of Trinidad and Tobago

Export processing zones (EPZs) are increasingly being established to promote economic growth in developing countries. However, they remain controversial and are often criticized for being associated with a “race to the bottom” characterized by the easing of labor and environmental standards. This paper investigates whether the decision to locate facilities inside these zones is associated with higher corporate environmental performance. Findings indicate that facilities operating in Trinidad and Tobago’s EPZs are more likely to show higher corporate environmental performance than those outside. Additionally, firms in state-managed zones appear to show higher corporate environmental performance than those located in privately managed zones. Enhanced institutional pressures from regulators, local communities, and fellow tenant firms may explain these differences. These results suggest that environmental policy makers and environmentalists can take advantage of already established EPZs to promote enclave enhanced institutional pressures associated with superior corporate environmental performance.
