Diagnostic imaging in cases of suspected child abuse--focus craniocerebral trauma divergent guidelines and resulting problems

For the clinical diagnosis of non-accidental craniocerebral trauma in children there are different recommendations and guidelines, which are not completely consistent. Depending on the examiner, the focus may be on therapeutic relevance, minimization of the exposure to radiation or potential conclusions as to the course of events. Under certain circumstances it may be difficult for the responsible institution to deal with all three perspectives, as is shown by the presented case. From the authors' point of view it would be desirable to work out a common guideline taking into account paediatric radiological and medicolegal aspects.     

remotely sensed: a topography of the global sex trade

Voluntarily or not, women are moved in great numbers from Manila to Nigeria, from Burma to Thailand, and from post-socialist countries to Western Europe: female geobodies in the flow of global capitalism. The recently released 53-minute video essay Remote Sensing by the Swiss artist and video director Ursula Biemann traces the routes and reasons of women who migrate into the global sex industry. Taking a geographical approach to trafficking, the video develops a particular visual language generated by new media and satellite technologies, which traces the migration of women in the age of digital images.All stills are taken from the video that was shot in the Philippines, Thailand, California, and the German–Czech border.

The Politics of Benchcraft: The Role of Judges in Mental Health Courts

Mental health courts (MHCs) offer community‐based treatment in lieu of criminal prosecution for chronic offenders with psychiatric disabilities, and MHC judges enjoy expanded powers to achieve the court's objectives. Because scholars know little about how judges transition into a new occupational role in the problem‐solving courtroom, this ethnographic study of four MHCs in the United States focuses on how judges learn to orchestrate their responses to treatment noncompliance in this novel court setting. The goal of this article is to examine the professionalization of MHC judges and the emergent craft of therapeutic adjudication. To achieve this goal, I investigate judicial strategies for motivating, questioning, and defending participants accused of wrongdoing. I conclude that the art and practice of problem‐solving justice requires judges to rise to the larger institutional challenges embedded in the alternative courtroom, a process I call the politics of benchcraft.     

Kontinuität und Wandel

Nach einer ersten Phase der ?Ad-hoc-Transformationsforschung“ (Hradil 1996) begann mit einiger Verspätung die Debatte um theoretische Erklärungsmöglichkeiten der postsozialistischen Transformationsprozesse. Anknüpfend an kritische Auseinandersetzungen mit so genannten ?grand theories“ wird hier für die Nutzung neoinstitutionalistischer Theorieangebote in der Transformationsforschung plädiert. Der Aufsatz will zur Klärung des verwendeten Institutionenbegriffs beitragen und versucht — in Reaktion auf kritische Einwände gegen institutionalistisch inspirierte Transformationsforschungen — zu zeigen, dass ein Anknüpfen an neoinstitutionalistische Theorieangebote weder mit einer Abstraktion von Akteuren und Akteurshandeln verbunden ist, noch die Kontinuitäten der alten Ordnung überbetont. Meine These ist vielmehr, dass mit einem neoinstitutionalistischen Ansatz auch rapide und tiefgreifende Wandlungsprozesse erklärt werden können, ohne jedoch den in der Transformationsforschung zunächst verbreiteten ?Tabula-rasa-Vorstellungen“ zu verfallen.
