State Power and Ideology in Britain: Mrs Thatcher's Privatization Programme

State-centred theory, a leading exemplar of the new institutionalism, assumes the separation of state from society and objectivity from subjectivity. This epistemological stance supports a structural analysis which holds that the state is an actor in its own right, that the state has distinctive interests, and that state capacity depends on strong institutions and weak societal opposition. Yet the case of the Thatcher governments'ideologically motivated privatization programme challenges the statists'hypotheses and epistemology. Rather, the making of British privatization policy supports the view that the way political actors form and use ideas is important in explaining state power and in defending the liberal democratic vision of mankind as the maker of history.

Sex and Experience: Modeling the Public’s Perceptions of Justice, Satisfaction, and Attitude Toward the Courts

The purpose of the present study is to examine the influence that sex has on the interconnection between justice, satisfaction with the courts, and attitudes toward the courts. Using national level polling data, the results show that different forms of justice coalesce into a latent measure of justice. Further, the results show that sex differences in our latent measure of justice do exist. In addition, those with experience with the course have a negative attitude toward the court system. Finally, the results show that the impact of justice on attitude toward the court system is partially mediated by satisfaction with the court. Policy implications are discussed.     

从构建和谐社会角度看解决中国老年妇女问题的重要性

老年妇女问题是中国构建和谐社会必须面对的一个重要问题。一方面,老年妇女问题是老年人问题的核心,不仅具有老年人问题的普遍性,也具有老年妇女问题的特殊性;另一方面,老年妇女问题又是社会性别文化的产物,受到文化、制度、观念和环境的多重影响。在中国已进入老龄社会的时期,构建具有社会性别视角的政策支持体系是解决老年妇女问题的关键所在。     

汉、藏、回族司法精神病鉴定对比分析

目的:汉、藏、回族存在文化和生活习俗的差异,本研究旨在探讨汉、藏、回族人群在司法精神病鉴定中的差异。方法:在本中心1982年至2004年接受的司法精神病案例中,选择其中汉、藏、回族案例进行回顾性分析。结果:三组均以男性为主,且藏、回族男性比例高于汉族:汉族以工人、农民为主,藏、回族绝大多数为农民,并且比例高于汉族,汉族除初中文化程度比例高于藏、回族外,其余文化程度无显著差异。暴力案比例藏族高于汉、回族,经济案比例回族高于汉、藏族,其它案件类型无显著差异。疾病诊断中汉族诊断为精神分裂症者为著,其构成比最高(21.3%);诊断为精神发育迟滞藏族最低,其构成比为10.0%;无精神病者中藏族比例最高。汉、藏、回族三组责任能力之间无显著差异。结论:本资料显示,司法精神病鉴定中,汉、藏、回族其一般人口学特征、案件类型、案件特征、疾病种类等方面存在有一定的差异。
