Dumping of victims in walls

A case is described in which a 58-year-old woman was shot and then dumped in a wall. She was immured under the staircase in the basement of a residential house by the offender, who was acting alone. The body was not found until 8 months later. The victim had been reported missing by members of her family. The cool environment delayed the onset of putrefactive changes so that it was not difficult to conduct forensic pathologic investigations into the bullet wound, with traces of gunpowder residue found on the victim's head. The way in which the offense was committed did not provide any indication of diminished responsibility on the part of the 27-year-old offender, which was reflected in the judicial consequences.     

Some pyridine derivatives as "route-specific markers" in 4-methoxyamphetamine (PMA) prepared by the Leuckart Method Studies on the role of the aminating agent in their distribution in the final product

The two previously unknown isomeric aryl-methylpyridines were prepared and analysed. Both 2,6-dimethyl-3,5-(4'-methoxyphenyl)pyridine and 2,4-dimethyl-3,5-di-(4'-methoxyphenyl)pyridine have been identified as a new by-product in the crude 4-methoxyamphetamine (PMA) obtained via the Leuckart method. The synthesis of 2,6-dimethyl-3,5-diphenylpyridine, which is connected to amphetamine chemistry, is also reported. It was also found that different reagents (formamide, formamide/HCOOH, ammonium formate) used in the course of the Leuckart synthesis of PMA significantly affected the impurity content. The presented results point out on the "high-boiling pyridines" as compounds especially useful in the comparative analysis, since their profile seems to be independent on the purification procedure and may be conveyed from the crude reaction mixture even into a carefully purified final product.     

Factors and circumstances influencing the development of hemorrhages in livor mortis

Petechial hemorrhages or ecchymoses in the skin of the face and/or in eyelids and/or conjunctivae are one important feature in postmortem diagnosis of lethal strangulation. On the other hand, petechial bleedings can occur in various causes of death, especially in cases of neck or thoracic compression, they can occur in acute cardiac failure, as a result of blood or skin diseases or as a postmortem phenomenon. The focus of this investigation (retrospective study of 279 corpses, found initially in a prone position or some other face down position) was to analyse the frequency of postmortem (hypostatic) hemorrhages and factors which may influence their development. Petechial hemorrhages in livor mortis in the skin of the trunk and extremities were found in 110 cases (39%). The frequency ranged from 41% in the side position and 44% in the kneeling position to 50% in the prone position. Increasing intensity of livor mortis resulted in an increasing frequency of hemorrhages, up to 59%. In cases with a body-mass-index (BMI) of more than 26 the frequency of hemorrhages increased up to 64%. In cases without livor mortis when the corpses were found as well as in cases with complete movement of livor mortis after turning the corpses, no hemorrhages were found. If hypostasis was partly or completely fixed, the rate of hemorrhages increased up to 50%, without additional increase in longer postmortem intervals. Obviously postmortem petechiae develop neither very soon nor days after death, but within a period of several hours after death.     

Fatal and non-fatal bilateral delayed carotid artery dissection after manual strangulation

Carotid artery (CA) dissection and/or thrombosis may occur in a number of medical and forensic relevant situations. However, post traumatic carotid artery dissection is considered rare, and often underestimated due to possible delayed presentation. We describe two cases of carotid artery dissection following strangulation with delayed symptoms as well as discuss medical diagnostic problems and their forensic implications.     

Allele frequencies of the ACTBP2 (=SE33), D18S51, D8S1132, D12S391, D2S1360, D3S1744, D5S2500, D7S1517, D10S2325 and D21S2055 loci in a German population sample

A population study on 10 tetrameric STR loci (ACTBP2 (=SE33), D18S51, D8S1132, D12S391, D2S1360, D3S1744, D5S2500, D7S1517, D10S2325, D21S2055) was performed with Germans from Bavaria.     

Autosomic STR population data in two Caribbean samples from Colombia

In this work, a sample of 124 unrelated individuals from San Andres Island and Santa Marta City (Colombia) was studied for the nine STRs included in the AmpFlSTR Profiler kit (CSF1PO, D3S1358, D5S818, D7S820, D13S317, FGA, TH01, TPOX and vWA). Although these two populations are geographically apart, San Andres is an Island in the middle of Caribbean Sea (about 480 miles northwest the Colombian mainland) and Santa Marta City located in the coast, exact test showed no differentiation between both population samples (P=0.39445+/-0.0805). Therefore, allele frequencies and parameters of forensic interest were estimated for the global sample.
