Memories of menarche: Age,preparation, and prior knowledge as determinants of initial menstrual experience

The relationships between age at menarche, preparation for menarche, and initial experience of menarche, were assessed in a retrospective questionnaire administered to 97 college-aged women. The more knowledgeable a girl was prior to menarche, the more adequate she perceived her preparation for menarche to have been; and the older she was at the time of menarche, the more likely she was to report a positive initial experience. These data support clinical anecdotes describing initial responses to menarche, and provide information about the factors which can moderate the extent to which menarche is experienced as a traumatic and disruptive event.Portions of this research were presented at the annual meeting of the Eastern Psychological Association, Hartford, Conn., April 1980.Received Ph.D. in psychology from Tufts University. 印度的粮食危机

从1956年4月到1961年3月的印度第二个五年经济计划,按其执行情况来说,前景是十分不妙的。根据印度政府计划委员会在7月4日发表的一项官方报告中宣布,铜、煤、粮食、棉花以及就业等重要项目的原定指标将不能完成,而其中,粮食问题是一个严重的问题。由于印度政府执行:对内则牺牲人民利益,一味屈从大资产阶级和封建势力,对外则依靠帝国主义“援助”的政策,因此,计划执行的结果,除了一些可使资本家获得巨额利润的工业企业得到发展外,农业生产,特别是粮食生产仍远远落后于人民生活的最低需要。在第二个五年计划执行期间,印度人民所得到的只是严重缺粮,批发价格上升了20%以上、生活更加困难、失业队伍不断扩大。农业问题是印度发展经济的根本问题。对于发展农业生产,印度政府不是依靠人民的力量,不敢从彻底的土地改革着手,而是醉心于争取“外援”。依靠“外援”,特别是投靠美国帝国主义能够解决印度的困难吗?本期选载的印度“新世纪”周报发表的“美印粮食贷欵协定只对美国有利”一文,揭露了“美援”的实质,另外也选载了“印度的粮食危机”和“第三个五年计划面对的实际问题”两篇文章,这主要是反映印度官方人物及其美国谋士对印度当前最重要的经济问题的献策。从这两篇文章里面,读者可以知道当前印度所面对的经济问题的梗概。     

Detection of sequence variation in the HVII region of the human mitochondrial genome in 689 individuals using immobilized sequence-specific oligonucleotide probes

We have developed a rapid, immobilized probe-based assay for the detection of sequence variation in the hypervariable segment II (HVII) of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region. Using a panel of 17 sequence-specific oligonucleotide (SSO) probes immobilized on nylon membrane strips, we typed 689 individuals from four population groups. The genetic diversity value for each population was calculated from the frequency data, and the frequencies of distinct "mitotypes" in each group were determined. We performed DNA sequence analysis of 129 samples to characterize the sequences associated with "blanks" (absence of probe signals) and weak probe signals. Out of 689 samples, we observed five heteroplasmic samples (excluding the variable C-stretch beginning at position 303) using the immobilized SSO probe panel. The SSO probe strips were used for the analysis of shed hairs and bloodstains from several criminal cases in Sweden, one of which is described here. We conclude that this mtDNA typing system is useful for human identification and significantly decreases casework turnaround time.     

Photoluminescent CdS/dendrimer nanocomposites for fingerprint detection

CdS/dendrimer nanocomposites with a range of concentrations of the photoluminescent semiconductor nanocluster and the dendrimer are prepared in methanol and 1:9 methanol:water solutions. The solutions are utilized for detection of cyanoacrylate ester fumed and unfumed fingerprints on polyethylene and aluminum foil.     

Immunohistochemical study of tyrosine phosphorylation signaling in the involuted thymus

Thymic involution has been reported to be an important parameter of the degree and duration of child abuse. In the present study, we assessed the status of tyrosine phosphorylation signaling, which is known to play a key role in the physiological function of the thymus, in involuted thymuses of abused children through immunohistological studies performed with anti-phosphotyrosine antibodies. We found that tyrosine-phosphorylated proteins were present in high amounts in Hassall's corpuscles (HC) in the medulla of control thymuses. In involuted thymuses of abused children, expression of tyrosine-phosphorylated proteins was reduced with accompanying morphological changes of HC, such as reduction in size or calcification. These findings lead us to the suggestion that tyrosine phosphorylation signaling is reduced in involuted thymuses of abused children and that reduction of the signaling may be associated with morphological changes of HC as observed in involuted thymuses of abused children. In order to certify the suggestion, we investigated expression of tyrosine-phosphorylated proteins in involuted thymuses of stressed rats as well as in control thymuses. Immunohistochemistry revealed that tyrosine-phosphorylated proteins were expressed in control thymuses, more abundantly in the medulla, and reduced remarkably in involuted thymuses of stressed rats. Further, immunoblot analysis also showed that expression of phosphotyrosine-containing proteins was reduced in thymus extracts of involuted thymuses of stressed rats, thus supporting the suggestion. Our results also raise the possibility that components of tyrosine phosphorylation signaling could be a molecular marker for thymic involution.
