Making Huadai

Miao huadai （patterned belts） are the most common handicraft product of the Miao people of western Hunan. An important part of Miao costume and adornment, they come in a variety of types, developed over their long history. This kind of handwork is known as ＂making patterns＂ or ＂making patterned belts.＂     

Miao New Year Celebration

Miao New Year, as opposed to Spring Festival （Chinese New year）, is generally celebrated by the Miao people of western Hunan after the winter solstice, in the l Oth month of the lunar calendar, which they have always regarded as the beginning of the new year. In advance of its coming, every household will prepare copious amounts of food, rice wine, corn wine and rice cakes made from the best glutinous rice to entertain visitors or to give as gifts. Major activities include butchering pigs, salting meat, making rice cakes, worshipping ancestors, reunion dinners, drinking from village to village, song competition, drum contests and duck-catching, and so on. The celebration usually lasts for three to five days but sometimes for as long as two weeks.

Strategic Balance in the Asia-Pacific Region

The authors analyze events in the Asia-Pacific region since the end of the Cold War and then draw three conclusions about the strategic balance of "one superpower, multiple major powers" in this region. First, compared with a stable superpower, the U.S., current multiple powers-China, Japan,Russia, ASEAN, India and Australia-are more dynamic.Second, two kinds of forces maintain order-a combination of national strength and non-national strength. On one hand, there are four different models which could ensure Asia-Pacific order in the future the U.S. model of hegemony, China's model of a harmonious Asia-Pacific region, ASEAN's model of regional cooperation, and the model of non-states actors. On the other hand, four different structures-security, production, finance and knowledge-are closely linked in this area. Third,globalization of the market economy brings dynamic and diverse development. The authors believe that China's"Harmonious Asia-Pacific" model is the best choice for the Asia-Pacific strategic pattern of "One superpower, multiple major powers."

The author believes that in contrast to the enhanced regional security regimes in Europe and elsewhere, the security mechanism for Northeast Asia is still just a talking point. He than gives illustration on the peaceful development on the Peninsula and China's role. Finally, he talks about some Chinese thoughts regarding this issue, and hopes that consensus regarding the format, content and membership of a potential peace regime could emerge from these preliminary explorations.
