The impact of police charges in incidents of wife abuse

The present study addressed the impact of an urban police force laying criminal charges in cases of wife abuse. Follow-up data from battered women and from police officers were collected to identify the long-term consequences of this police policy that began in 1981, including any negative or unintended side effects. Results indicated that the policy resulted in a dramatic increase in police-laid charges (2500%), and a shift from the Family to the Criminal Division of Provincial Court. Based on interview data, victims did not decrease their requests for police service (a feared side effect) and reported a significantly higher level of satisfaction with police service in this area. A significant reduction in police calls and victim-reported violence was associated with police intervention, especially when charges were laid. Paradoxically, police officers' attitudes about the policy were more negative than the actual positive changes that they helped to produce. Considerations for future research and professional training are outlined.

Lyotard: after and with Marx,within and against capital

This article examines Lyotard's thought by means of a review of his conceptions of Marx and capital. Lyotard is taken to hold ambiguous views on both Marx and capital throughout his career. These ambiguities reflect his development of a post-Marxist standpoint. The ambiguous character of Lyotard's reading of Marx and capital is heightened by the fact that the ways in which they are formulated vary in the course of his career. In criticizing Marx, Lyotard tends to assume an absolutist form of Marxism that abstracts from the variety of ways in which Marx can and has been interpreted. Likewise, Lyotard tends to misrecognize how he retains aspects of Marx's critique of capital, and hence does not explore the critical connections between his own standpoint and that of Marx.

Im Zusammenhang mit einer Europ?ischen Bodenschutzstrategie sind wichtige Problemfelder des Bodenschutzes in den Gremien der Europ?ischen Union differenziert er?rtert und bereits bodenschutzdienliche Regelungen in einzelnen Materien, insbes. im Landwirtschafts- und Abfallrecht erlassen worden. Seitens der Wissenschaft wird z. T. eine gesamthafte Regelung für erforderlich gehalten. Formulierungen der Aktionsprogramme für den Umweltschutz, rsp. das 6. Aktionsprogramm von 2002, weisen in diese Richtung, w?hrend die Mitteilung der Kommission Hin zu einer spezifischen Bodenschutzstrategie, derzufolge diese einen umfassenderen und systematischeren Bodenschutz erm?glichen will, insoweit keine eindeutigen Aussagen enth?lt. Auch das Europ?ische Parlament hat in seiner Stellungnahme zur Strategie zwar die Umkehr der alarmierenden Trends von Erosion, Verdichtung und Versiegelung, Beseitigung und Verunreinigung von B?den gefordert, sich jedoch zu der Empfehlung einer übergreifenden Regelung nicht entschlie?en k?nnen, so dass zu befürchten ist, dass es bei einem normativen Flickenteppich des Bodenschutzes bleibt.     

Power Dynamics in an Experimental Game

We introduce a new experimental method for studying power. Drawing from multiple theoretical perspectives, we conceptualize power as relational and structural, as well as comprised of different forms through which basic human needs can be met. Thus, the method we introduce examines how, when faced with a particular need, people use multiple forms of power concurrently and within a “field of influence,” namely, the other players in a game. This enabled us to examine how one form of power is transformed into another and how power is transferred from one player to another through interaction, as well as to measure power as behavior, as the exercise of choice, as potential, and as outcomes. Two experiments using egalitarian start conditions and a survivable ecology demonstrated that participants used power to gain more power, creating inequality. Being the target of force made some players unable to “survive” in the local ecology. Theoretical and methodological issues in the study of power are discussed and the application of our game method to the study of power in other fields is considered.     

Is there a magical time boundary for diagnosing eyewitness identification accuracy in sequential line‐ups?

We examined whether eyewitness identification latencies for sequential line‐up decisions indicate an optimum time boundary that reliably discriminates accurate from inaccurate decisions. Participants (N = 381) observed a crime simulation and attempted two separate identifications from target‐present or target‐absent sequential line‐ups. As has previously been found with simultaneous line‐ups, the optimum time boundary identified did not reliably discriminate accurate from inaccurate identifications for both line‐up targets. Diagnosticity for choosers was, however, much higher at very high confidence levels than at lower levels. Possible reasons for why one index of signal strength (confidence), but not another (latency), might postdict accuracy within the sequential framework were presented.
