Significant Predictors of Soccer Players’ Moral Functioning from Components of Contextual Injustice, Sensitivity to Injustice and Moral Atmosphere

This study analysed the effects of contextual injustice on the moral functioning of soccer players with two goals: (1) to identify the factors of contextual injustice, moral atmosphere and sensitivity to injustice that significantly predict moral functioning and (2) to test the hypothesis that sensitivity to injustice has an effect only in unjust contexts. Three hundred players (from 16 to 40 years old) participated in the study. The analyses indicated a negative and significant effect of contextual injustice on moral functioning. Sensitivity to injustice was, like moral atmosphere, one of the best predictors of moral functioning. Moreover, sensitivity to injustice was a significant predictor of moral functioning in both just and unjust contexts.     

A comparative analysis of trade and economic integration in East Asia and Latin America

This paper provides an analysis of the two channels of regional integration: integration via markets and integration via agreements. Given that East Asia and Latin America are two fertile regions where both forms of integrations have taken place, we examine the experiences of these two areas to illustrate our conclusions. There are three related results. First, East Asia has been integrating via the markets long before formal agreements have been in vogue in the region. Latin America, on the other hand, has primarily been using formal regional trade treaties as the main channel of integration. Second, despite the relative lack of formal regional trade treaties until recently, East Asia is more integrated among itself than Latin America. Third, from a purely economic and trade standpoint, the proper sequence of integrations seems to be first integrating via the markets and subsequently via formal regional trade agreements. One interpretation of the relative success of the East Asian approach is that regional trade agreements often serve multiple constituents. Integrating via markets first can be helpful because this can give a stronger political bargaining power to the outward-looking economic-oriented forces within the country.     

Validation of a microchip electrophoresis system as a DNA amplification control

As part of the normal procedure in a forensic DNA laboratory, a quality control step of the amplified DNA is often implemented to ensure the correct amplification of the sample before it is analysed in downstream applications. A validation study was undertaken to investigate a new microchip electrophoresis system (MultiNa, Shimadzu Corporation) claiming high resolution and sensitivity compared to routine polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). An array of STR multiplexes (AmpFISTR™ SGM+, GenePrint^® FFFL, PowerPlex™ 16, PowerPlex™ Y, an in-house Y-STR multiplex and AmpFISTR™ Profiler) was tested under both standard and low copy number PCR parameters to evaluate the accuracy, reproducibility and sensitivity of this technique. These tests showed that the microchip system did not have improved sensitivity compared to PAGE though had increased resolution and high reproducibility between samples.     

Site‐, Technique‐, and Time‐Related Aspects of the Postmortem Redistribution of Diazepam,Methadone, Morphine,and their Metabolites: Interest of Popliteal Vein Blood Sampling

Sampling site, technique, and time influence postmortem drug concentrations. In 57 cases, we studied drug concentration differences as follows: subclavian vein‐dissection/clamping versus blind stick, femoral vein‐dissection/clamping versus blind stick, right cardiac chamber, and popliteal vein‐dissection and clamping only. Cases were distributed in group #1 (all cases with both techniques), group #2 (dissection/clamping), and group #3 (blind stick). Sampled drugs were diazepam, methadone, morphine, and their metabolites. To assess PMR, mean concentrations and ratios were calculated for each group. Time‐dependent variations of blood concentrations and ratios were also assessed. Results indicate that site, method, and time may influence postmortem distribution interpretation in different ways. Popliteal blood seems less subject to PMR. In conclusion, our study is the first to evaluate concurrently three main aspects of PMR and confirms that the popliteal vein may represent a site that is more resistant to the changes seen as a result of PMR.     

A collaborative study of the EDNAP group regarding Y-chromosome binary polymorphism analysis

A collaborative study was carried out by the European DNA Profiling Group (EDNAP) in order to evaluate the performance of Y-chromosome binary polymorphism analysis in different European laboratories. Four blood samples were sent to the laboratories, to be analysed for 11 Y-chromosome single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs): SRY-1532, M40, M35, M213, M9, 92R7, M17, P25, M18, M153 and M167. All the labs were also asked to submit a population study including these markers. All participating laboratories reported the same results, indicating the reproducibility and robustness of Y-chromosome SNP typing. A total of 535 samples from six different European populations were also analysed. In Galicia (NW Spain) and Belgium, the most frequent haplogroup was R1b*(xR1b1,R1b3df). Haplogroup F*(xK) is one of the most frequent in Austria and Denmark, while the lowest frequency appear in Belgium. Haplogroup frequencies found in this collaborative study were compared with previously published European Y-chromosome haplogroup data.
