The objective of this research was to determine the treatment outcome for a group of adult male city-sentenced inmates and parole violators in a High Impact Incarceration Program (HIIP) “boot camp”. The research design was a quasi-experimental, one-group, pretest/posttest design without a control group (APA, 1982). The setting for the study was the new York City Department of Correction High Impact Incarceration Program (HIIP) on Rikers Island. The participants consisted of thirty-three (33) adult male city-sentenced inmates and parole violators who volunteered to participate in the rigorous boot camp program. The High Impact Incarceration Program (HIIP) was the experimental/independent variable for this study as well as the treatment intervention that was utilized in this research. The outcome measure was the Carlson Psychological Survey (CPS). The research question for this study was: What, if any, change(s) in personality disorder and its comorbid factors (dependent variable) take place in the inmate/subject after a period of high impact incarceration? The intervention (HIIP) lowers the pre to post level means of four (4) of the five (5) variables. Two of the four decreases are significant: Chemical Abuse (CA) and Self-Depreciation (SD), with the latter being highly significant (ANOVA P-Value of 0.0000). The largest of the four decreases is 27%. The fifth variable—Validity—(V) is unaffected by the intervention with pre and post means of 3.394 and 3.409, respectively. The variable Antisocial Tendencies (AT) comes near to significance with a confidence of .0677. Though Disturbance (TD) proved unaffected by the intervention. HIIP appears to be significantly effective in changing certain personality factors and their comorbid factors while the teammates (inmates) are within this intensive, rigorous, and highly structured program. Further research is necessary to determine what effect this personality change has on the rate of recidivism. 相似文献

This article examines the evidence for the empirical argument that there is a slippery slope between the legalization of voluntary and non-voluntary euthanasia. The main source of evidence in relation to this argument comes from the Netherlands. The argument is only effective against legalization if it is legalization which causes the slippery slope. Moreover, it is only effective if it is used comparatively-to show that the slope is more slippery in jurisdictions which have legalized voluntary euthanasia than it is in jurisdictions which have not done so. Is it possible to export democracy? That question underlies current U.S. foreign policy, and answering it requires an operational definition of democracy that distinguishes its essential attributes from circumstantial ones. Liberal representative government under law, sustained by a political culture that accepts open disagreement and demands accountability, provides the only form of democracy that has sustained itself over time. Democracy typically emerges from within a society, and history demonstrates the difficulty of making democracy work. Imposing it externally presents further challenges while risking a backlash. The project of spreading democracy must therefore be separated from the objective of establishing a stable order favoring American interests so that the latter end can be achieved by more modest means. 相似文献

Two very serious prison escapes in 1994–5 prompted the Home Secretary, Michael Howard, to dismiss the Prison Service head, Derek Lewis (a contracted businessman) who successfully sued for full compensation and costs. This sacking and law suit were unprecedented events which highlighted familiar tensions about the 'policy' and 'administrative' ('operational') distinction and what passes for the theory of individual ministerial responsibility to Parliament. This article reviews four serious prison security failures in England and Northern Ireland since 1983 and the standard ministerial posture blaming operational error rather than their own policy framework. Drawing on interviews with relevant senior figures, the exceptionally politically sensitive case of executive agency status for the Prison Service of England and Wales is considered. The 'Lewis vs. Howard' affair is placed in its context of the increasingly managerial ambitions of both 'incomer' and career civil servants which conflict with traditionally comprehensive, but symbolic, ministerial responsibility. 相似文献
