Australia's security and the threat of Islamic extremism in southeast Asia

Australian foreign and security policy confronts a series of difficult challenges in coping with the emergence of an Islamic extremist threat in Southeast Asia. Australian policy makers are being drawn into unfamiliar linkages with moderate Islam, and into closer cooperation with Indonesia, the most populous Islamic nation in the world, in an attempt to offset Islamic extremists. Further, they must achieve those objectives at a time when important interests are at stake beyond Southeast Asia, when bipartisan agreement about the direction of foreign policy is waning, and when divisions over the appropriate trajectory of Australian security policy are intense. A delicacy almost unprecedented in Australian foreign policy will be required.     

“Fifth business”: The librarian,the criminal justice scholar,and the search for primary sources

Traditional conceptions of the role of the librarian in the research process are generally limited to viewing this resource as a means of assisting in the location of supporting secondary materials. In contrast to this, the view presented here is concerned only with the several ways in which the librarian can play a more active part in the overall process by helping to identify research models and methods and collections of primary materials appropriate to the project at hand. Particular attention is paid to the growing importance of libraries as archival repositories by including in their holdings various of the many collections of archives now available in microform. Computerized bibliographic data bases are considered, but only in the context of their potential as sources of primary data. Finally, some discussion is given of collections of primary materials in machine-readable form, and how these may be surveyed and exploited most effectively through the systematic use of relevant bibliographic sources.     

The new surveillance: Electronic technologies and the maximum security society

Conclusion Gary Marx' Undercover provides a fine basis for fuller sociological analysis of electronic surveillance in the late twentieth century. He is correct that new technology is implicated in a new surveillance, although the interplay between social and technological factors must constantly be in view. Above all it is computers, or, more properly, computers-plus-telecommunications that facilitate the new surveillance. They do so by allowing for the creation of novel categories of personal data, seen especially at present in computer matching. But they may also be enabling anather new departure, the integration of moments of surveillance once the province of quite distinct social institutions.The threat of a maximum security society emerging within the very liberal democratic contexts that cherish (above all economic) liberties is a reality. But fresh social analysis is called for, as the popularly-used and illuminative panoptic concept suffers from a number of basic flaws, and because we have yet to connect satisfactorily the equally pertinent themes of privacy and freedom. Modern social control seems to utilize several different disciplines, often acting in concert but in complex ways. The fact that some of the most potent arise in situations as apparently innocent as buying a restaurant meal with a credit card should not lull us into thinking that they are any less worrisome than certain undercover police tactics.

“Our Respective Empires Should Stand Together”: The Royal Dimension in Anglo-Japanese Relations, 1919–1941

In the inter-war period court diplomacy played an important role in Anglo-Japanese relations. Both governments saw the exchange of high-level royal visits and the conferment of decorations, such as the bestowal of the Order of the Garter to Emperor Hirohito in 1929, as a useful means of indicating respect and the desire for continued co-operation. Even as late as 1937 Prince Chichibu’s attendance at King George VI’s coronation was intended to lead to closer ties. This article demonstrates that the neglected field of court diplomacy and diplomatic protocol can provide a useful parallel commentary on more overtly political events.     

You shouldn't feel that way! Extending the emotional victim effect through the mediating role of expectancy violation

Recent research has shown that the ‘emotional victim effect’ (an emotional victim is more readily believed than a nonemotional victim) is mediated by expectancy violation: people base their judgments about a victim's credibility on their expectations of the victim's suffering. Victims whose behavior is inconsistent with these expectations suffer a loss of credibility. In this article, we further examine the role of expectancy violation and explore possible negative effects of a victim's highly emotional post-crime reaction. Using several mediations, we demonstrate three important contributions to the existing literature. First, we demonstrate that, in the same way as expectancy violation mediates the effect from nonverbal emotional expression on perceived credibility, this mediating effect would also hold for the verbal expression of emotions. Second, we demonstrate that expectancy violation mediates the effect from a victim's verbal emotional expression on the observer's attitude toward the victim. More specifically, we demonstrate that a highly emotional written Victim Impact Statement (VIS) could lead to secondary victimization, dependent on the observer's expectations regarding the effects of the crime. Third, this article is the first to demonstrate that expectancy violation leads to a negative effect on people's acceptance of the VIS in the criminal justice procedure.     

Integrated DNA and Fingerprint Analyses in the Identification of 60‐Year‐Old Mummified Human Remains Discovered in an Alaskan Glacier

Abstract: This report describes the identification of a merchant mariner who perished in 1948 when Northwest Airlines Flight 4422, a DC‐4 carrying 24 seamen and six crew members crashed into Mount Sanford, Alaska. Fifty‐one years later, a human forearm and hand were found close by the wreckage of the plane, prompting identification efforts using DNA and fingerprints. There were significant challenges to both the fingerprint and DNA analyses. The hand was badly desiccated, making fingerprint friction‐ridge detail almost invisible and the remains had been embalmed upon discovery, making DNA amplification difficult. We present the results of an interdisciplinary approach that successfully addressed these challenges and ultimately led to the identification of the remains. These efforts relied on efficient fingerprint rejuvenation and imaging techniques that improved print resolution, as well as new DNA extraction techniques optimized for aggressively embalmed remains.
