Does an increasing divide in normative notions within a population influence citizens’ political protest behaviour? This article explores whether public opinion polarisation stimulates individuals to attend lawful demonstrations. In line with relative deprivation theory, it is argued that in an environment of polarisation, individuals’ normative notions are threatened, increasing the probability that they will actively participate in the political decision‐making process. Using the European Social Survey from the period 2002–2014 and focusing on subnational regions, multilevel analyses are conducted. Thereby a new index to measure public opinion polarisation is introduced. Depending on the issue, empirical results confirm the effect of polarisation. While average citizens are not motivated to demonstrate over the issue of whether people from other countries are a cultural threat, they are motivated by the issues of reducing inequality and of homosexuality. The article goes on to examine in a second step whether ideological extremism makes individuals more susceptible to environmental opinion polarisation. Findings show that members of the far left are more likely to protest when their social environment is divided over the issue of income inequality. In contrast, members of the far right are motivated by rising polarisation regarding homosexuality. Previous research has shown that teachers’ actions when addressing conflict on school grounds can shape adolescent perceptions
regarding how well the school manages victimization. Our objective in this study was to determine how these perceptions influenced
the likelihood that adolescent students would react to victimization scenarios by either seeking help from school authority
or physically fighting back. Vignettes describing two events of victimization were administered to 148 ethnic minority adolescents
(Latino, African American, and Asian backgrounds; 49% female) attending an urban high school with high rates of conflict.
Positive perceptions of teachers’ actions during conflicts—assessed via a questionnaire tapping how teachers manage student
conflicts both generally and in a specific instance of strife—predicted a greater willingness to seek help from school authority,
which in turn negatively predicted self-reported aggressive responses to the victimization scenarios. Path analysis established
the viability of this indirect effect model, even when we controlled for sex, beliefs about the acceptability of aggression,
and previous levels of reactive aggression. Adolescents’ perceptions of teachers’ actions during conflicts are discussed in
relation to social information processing models, improving student–teacher relations, and decreasing aggression at schools. 相似文献

I present a new method of interpreting voter preferences in settings where policy remains in effect until replaced by new legislation. In such settings voters consider not only the utility they receive from a given policy today, but also the utility they will receive from policies likely to replace that policy in the future. From a longitudinal sample (n = 957; 49.9% male; 77.3% White/non-Hispanic) of participants studied from infancy through age 15, adolescents’ depth of engagement
in, and quality of romantic relationships were predicted from early and contemporaneous parent–child interactive quality and
peer social competence. High quality maternal parenting and peer experiences prior to and during adolescence tended to be
negatively associated with the depth of engagement in this domain for the full sample, yet positively associated with the
quality of adolescents’ romantic relationships for the sub-set of individuals currently dating at age 15. Results reconcile
contrasting views of the origins of romantic relationship engagement and quality and the positive versus negative developmental

Shared services arrangements in the Australian third sector are becoming more common. Notably, however, there is a lack of information to guide nonprofit organisations through the development and engagement of shared structures. This article reviews the lessons that have been recorded from the public and private sectors with respect to the engagement of shared services arrangements. Additionally this article explores the different types of shared services structures that can be adopted. In 2005, Congress passed the Real ID Act despite decades of stalemate in reforming the U.S. national ID system. Using John Kingdon’s policy streams framework, the authors examine the development of reform ideas, the opening of a policy window and the shift in the national mood after the 9/11 attacks, and the legislative tactics by the George W. Bush administration that led to the passage of the act. The analysis illustrates the significance of policy entrepreneurship in national crises but also raises questions about the permanency of policy reforms and the ethical responsibilities of public administrators in such times. 相似文献
