“He did everything he possibly could for me”: medical malpractice claimants’ experiences of lawyer–client relations

Lawyers are obliged to act in the interests of their clients, however, it is not clear how lawyers should do this in practice. Should lawyers follow their clients' instructions without deviation, should they actively manage their clients' expectations, or as many studies suggest, do lawyers place their own interests first? This paper examines how lawyers interact with medical malpractice claimants. It reveals that lawyers take a client-aligned approach, where lawyers acknowledge their client's goals, but do not necessarily do what the client says. We argue that this approach is made necessary by legal and organisational constraints which limit the ability of lawyers to produce the types of outcomes that their clients want.     

The Impact of Exchange Rate on the Growth of Nigerian Economy From 1960 to 2010

This paper examined the impact of exchange rate on the growth of Nigerian economy using time series data from 1960 to 2010. The paper utilized secondary data and explored various econometrics and/or statistical analytical （E-view 7.0） method to examine the relationship between exchange rate and economic growth. The paper tested the stationarity--through unit root test （ADF）, Vector Autoregressive Estimates （VARs）, cointegration test, Granger-Causality test of Nigeria＇s time series data, and used an error correction model through over-parameterization and parsimonious model to determine the long-run relationship among the variables examined. It was discovered from the findings that the growth rate of national income was directly related to domestic investment and economic growth. The paper recommended based on the econometric results among others that the government should ensure that prevailing economic situation in Nigeria is tolerable in order to reap the full benefit/advantage of exchange rate policy, encourage domestic production of goods and services to enable the domestic economy to benefit from the exchange rate policy, ensure the stability of macroeconomics variables, and ensure the exchange rate policy which is to encourage exports and discourage imports in order to avoid cash drain （or flight） in the economy.     

The Evolving “Nature” of Environmental Risk: A Responsible Approach for Residential and Commercial Real Estate

Environmental losses suffered by commercial and residential real estate owners are becoming more frequent and severe due to evolving regulatory regimes and the changing global climate. This article reviews the nature of environmental risk, specifically within the context of a changing climate, and proposes the large-scale installation of green infrastructure as both a business opportunity for insurers and a responsible approach.     

Driving under the influence of amphetamine-like drugs

Scientific opinions differ whether the use of stimulants causes deterioration in driving skills. In 1857 of 8709 cases of driving under the influence of drugs, amphetamine-like drugs (amphetamine, methamphetamine, and methylendioxyamphetamine) were present either alone or together with other licit or illicit drugs. In 338 cases, amphetamines were the only psychoactive substance group in plasma at mean, median, and highest concentrations of 0.18, 0.12, and 1.05 mg/L, respectively. A widespread opinion is that after the consumption of amphetamines, centrally stimulating effects with corresponding consequences on safe driving are expected. In contrast, many cases were observed that rather suggested an influence of centrally sedating substances when considering the psycho-physical conditions. Relations between concentration and effect could not be established. The apparent sedation is probably the consequence of sleep deprivation during an amphetamine binge and the after-effects of the drug.     

Late adolescents' perceptions of their relationships with their parents: Relationships among deidealization,autonomy, relatedness,and insecurity and implications for adolescent adjustment and ego identity status

Questionnaire data from 376 undergraduates (mean age=19.3 years) were used to test a model describing interrelationships among deidealization, relatedness, autonomy, and insecurity in late adolescents' relationships with their parents. As expected, deidealization predicted greater autonomy and less relatedness (i.e., more disengagement), greater disengagement predicted greater insecurity, and greater insecurity predicted less autonomy. However, disengagement from parents proved to be a double-edged sword in that it was linked not only to insecurity, but also to feelings of greater separateness and self-directedness in relation, to parents. Additional analyses identified significant associations between the adolescent/parent relationship variables and the adolescents' psychological health and ego identity status.Received her Ph.D. from Yale University.
