We have assessed the histological preservation of naturally degraded human hair shafts, and then assayed each for levels of amplifiable mitochondrial DNA and damage-associated DNA miscoding lesions. The results indicate that as sample histology is altered (i.e. as hairs degrade) levels of amplifiable mitochondrial DNA decrease, but no correlation is seen between histology and absolute levels of mitochondrial DNA miscoding lesions. Nevertheless, amplifiable mitochondrial DNA could be recovered across the complete range of the histological preservation spectrum. However, when template copy number is taken into consideration, a correlation of miscoding lesions with histology is again apparent. These relationships indicate that a potential route for the generation of misleading mitochondrial sequence data exists in samples of poor histology. Therefore, we argue that in the absence of molecular cloning, the histological screening of hair may be necessary in order to confirm the reliability of mitochondrial DNA sequences amplified from hair, and thus represents a useful tool in forensic mitochondrial DNA analyses. 相似文献

Abstract: Provincially legislated special-purpose bodies created to pool municipal bond requirements have operated in Canada for several decades. American states have also adopted this Albertan/Canadian innovation. The organizations use different titles, such as municipal bond authorities/corporations and bond banks; this paper uses the generic term municipal bond bank, or mbb. These banks are separate legal entities, and the paper discusses the use of internalization theory as an explanation for their creation and continued use. Several US. empirical studies comparing the cost of municipal borrowing under a pooled mbb issue versus stand-alone issues were undertaken in the 1980s. The American studies' results support the practice of pooling debt issuance through bond banks and conclude that savings from mbb participation are inversely proportional to unit credit rating and size. This paper presents the findings of the first Canadian empirical study that compares the cost of municipal funds for pooled versus stand-alone issues. The study uses data from the Province of Ontario, as it is a large province and quantitative data was available; Ontario does not currently have an mbb. The Canadian study results share some similarity with the results of previous American studies in that they show that pooled financing through an mbb results, in aggregate, in cost-savings to municipal borrowers, with the greatest savings to those units that are small and un rated and that borrow for longer periods. The Canadian study suggests that the few large, highly rated municipalities that would receive little or no benefit from mbb participation and certain small issuer units that have found economical, alternative methods of raising funds retain the option of issuing debt outside a provincial mbb. This paper concludes with a reference to the discussion on the impact of municipal borrowing arrangements on provincial credit ratings. A review of four periods and a comparison of three regional institutions provide evidence for how serious China has become about multilateralism with its neighbors in Asia. Approval for multilateralism does not mean that China is ready to endorse strong regional organizations that bind their members, especially when it has reservations both about institutions that could undermine its narrow notion of sovereignty and norms that could support US or even Japanese efforts to impose long-feared universal values. If China calculates that limited multilateralism now provides a variety of benefits, to date its support reflects specific circumstances, not general trust in this format. Focusing on the Six-Party Talks as the presumed foundation for regionalism in Northeast Asia offers a concentrated view of strategic thinking toward the area most vital to China's security. In the standoff between North Korea and the United States we are able to assess the degree to which China accepts working with four or five states and the prospects for its active support, if circumstances permit, for the establishment of a peace and security mechanism through the fifth working group that originated in the Joint Agreement of February 2007. 相似文献

A 19‐year‐old woman with insulin‐dependent diabetes mellitus was found dead in bed having allegedly recently taken ecstasy and consumed alcohol. At autopsy, there were microhemorrhages in the brain with subnuclear vacuolization and Armanni–Ebstein changes in renal tubules. Biochemical analyses confirmed diabetic ketoacidosis (vitreous glucose—46.5 mmol/L; β‐OH butyrate—13.86 mmol/L.). Toxicological analyses of blood showed a low level of 3,4‐methylenedioxy‐methamphetamine (MDMA) (0.01 mg/L), with acetone but no alcohol or other common drugs. Death was attributed to diabetic ketoacidosis most likely provoked by mixed MDMA/alcohol ingestion. Although the use of illicit drugs by young individuals with diabetes mellitus is being increasingly recognized, it has been noted that there is minimal information about the relationship between drug use and acute diabetic complications. Toxicological screening of cases of lethal diabetic ketoacidosis in the young may clarify lethal mechanisms in individual cases and also help to determine the extent of this problem. 相似文献

AbstractScandals involving heads of state are generally the staple diet of news media. Internationally, the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky scandal and former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s “bunga bunga” sex escapades are some of the most memorable. In South Africa, scandals that marred former president Jacob Zuma’s term of office have continued to be the centre of attention long after he resigned as president. During his presidency, Zuma became one of the most covered (reported in the news) leaders across media platforms, in South Africa and beyond. This was largely due to allegations including corruption, his relationship with the Gupta family, and misuse of government funds to renovate his private property. Evoked in the media by various labels of controversy, the media frenzy dominated headlines in South Africa at the time. This article presents an account of how journalists actively construct labels for controversy associated with newsworthiness. The article makes a theoretical link between labels of controversies and news values, and argues that these labels are, in spite of their significance, the most understudied phenomena in mainstream journalism literature today.
