Delinquency as a symptom of adolescents' orientation toward status and success

In this paper, we follow the premise that delinquency in adolescence is a by-product of struggles with developmental tasks. In an empirical analysis of a survey of 1717 West German adolescents aged between 12 and 16, we found evidence that delinquency was associated with adolescents' conformity to society's standards of prestige and success. Data are presented that show a relationship between delinquency and inability to succeed at school, on the one hand, and failure to achieve full recognition of status and prestige in the peer group, on the other hand. The findings provide evidence that difficulties and problems connected with the integration into the network of academic performance, as well as difficulties and problems connected with recognition within the peer group, are associated with delinquency.This research was supported by the Center for Prevention and Intervention in Childhood and Adolescence at the University of Bielefeld, funded by grants from the German Research Association (Deutsche Forschungs-Gemeinschaft).Received Ph.D. in social psychology, from University of Münster, Federal Republic of Germany. The Standardization of Lawyers' Services

Recent Supreme Court decisions dealing with advertising by lawyers have focused new attention on the question whether lawyers perform services that are standardized or susceptible of standardization. The author examines the concept of standardization as applied to lawyers' services and suggests five indicators that might reveal the extent to which such services are or could become standardized. He also discusses bow advertising could accelerate the standardization of lawyers' services and briefly raises questions about what this will mean to lawyers and the public.     

Ethnic competition and mobilization in Taiwan’s politics

Both global and historical contexts point to the importance of studying ethnic issues in Taiwan. In this article the author attempts to examine the political conflicts between the immigrants and natives in Taiwan and their resource mobilization strategies. Statistical findings based on Taiwan’s election outcomes since 1986 are presented. The triangular relationship among the T-KMT, C-KMT, and DPP are analyzed. It is predicted that the mobilization strategies for the younger generation of immigrants may go beyond the tradiational political arena.
