Codeine and morphine blood concentrations increase during blood loss

During extensive blood loss, a plasma volume refill will take place by transfer of extravascular fluid into the circulation. Drugs present in this fluid may follow and cause a rise or a drop in blood drug concentration, depending on their levels and accessibility in the restoration fluid. This study explored the possible changes of codeine, and its metabolite morphine, in whole blood during a standardized exsanguination in the rat. Three doses containing 5 mg codeine were given orally. In eight rats, blood loss was accomplished by slowly withdrawing 0.8 mL blood at 10 min intervals during 70 min. In control rats, blood was withdrawn only at 0 and 70 min. At 70 min, the final/initial codeine and morphine concentration ratios were 0.70 +/- 0.38 and 0.88 +/- 0.47, respectively, in controls, but increased to 1.28 +/- 0.44 (p = 0.014) and 1.41 +/- 0.34 (p = 0.021), respectively, in exsanguinated rats. It is concluded that blood loss can affect blood drug concentrations.     

The "GeneTrustee": a universal identification system that ensures privacy and confidentiality for human genetic databases

This article describes a generic model for access to samples and information in human genetic databases. The model utilises a "GeneTrustee", a third-party intermediary independent of the subjects and of the investigators or database custodians. The GeneTrustee model has been implemented successfully in various community genetics screening programs and has facilitated research access to genetic databases while protecting the privacy and confidentiality of research subjects. The GeneTrustee model could also be applied to various types of non-conventional genetic databases, including neonatal screening Guthrie card collections, and to forensic DNA samples.     

Networking and Technology Transfer in the Spanish Ceramic Tiles Cluster: Its Role in the Sector Competitiveness

The ceramic tile cluster industry in Spain has actually a global turnover of approximately 3.000 M Euros of which a 60% is exported. Its annual growth has been around a steady 20% the last five tears. In spite of the traditional Italian technology leadership, the clusterization of this industry in Spain (90% of the producers are located in a 40 km geographical circle) has altered these traditional R&D roles. The increasing rate of technology transfer and co-operation, which is taking place, especially in the product development area, has enabled this change. This paper will aim to analyze the cluster competitiveness and the technology formal and informal cooperation networks, which have been established during the last twenty years in the industry and especially in the enamelling and decoration sub sector. A critical variable relates to product and design development. An outstanding fact has been the technology demand-pull movement exerted from the producers (200 firms mostly SMEs) and the consequent quick product development cycles observed in the latest sectoral fairs.     

Ownership of a cultural landmark: The case of Gotha Canal

Gotha Canal is perhaps the most gigantic construction work ever undertaken in Sweden. It is a seaway through Sweden that connects the Baltic Sea with the Atlantic Ocean. It is nowadays considered to be one of the most famous cultural landmarks in Sweden from the time it opened for traffic the canal was in 1832 until 1978 the canal was privately owned. Since then, it has been owned by the state. Such a long time of private ownership of transportation link is remarkable. This paper analyses why the change from private to state ownership finally took place and also looks at the implication of this ownership change for profit maximising behaviour and maintenance of the canal. A discussion of how ownership of a cultural landmark like Gotha Canal can be structured is also provided.
