This article places the Labour Party’s present post‐Corbyn renewal in the context of previous periods of renewal in the party’s recent history, associating with the new leadership of Keir Starmer a potential to rediscover the strategic project of the pluralist soft left as an alternative to the programmatic character of the hard left. After assessing the Corbynist hegemony established in the Labour Party between 2015 and 2019, it considers the current absence of any clearly defined set of principles or values underpinning ‘Starmerism’. It then looks back to the Kinnockite ascendency in the 1980s, and the Blairite ascendency in the 1990s, as possible templates for how the party reassesses its positioning with reference to changing electoral, social and economic circumstances. A critique of Corbynism’s left populism culminates in a consideration of the possible grounds for a new pluralist agenda attuned to the policy and electoral challenges Labour faces today.  相似文献

Bina Agarwal's ambitious and wide‐ranging book, A Field of One's Own: Gender and Land Rights in South Asia (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1994), is reviewed. Agarwal's argument is that women in South Asia should have the same land rights as men. She considers, in detail, the pervasiveness with which such land rights are absent (although they do exist in certain limited areas), why this is so, and the means by which such rights might be obtained. Among the issues raised are: the need for women's organisations at the village level, whether legislation on its own can confer genuine rights (the answer is ‘no'), how control of women's sexuality connects with male control of land, and regional differences within India (especially between North and South). The book is seen to be a magisterial study of high quality. The one criticism made of it is the implication of Agarwal's theoretical discussion that gender ideologies are determined by economic causes. This is contested.

The factors determining rural wage rates have remained problematic in writings on agrarian structure in rural India. First, a striking segmentation of the rural labour market has been widely noted so that different wage rates exist even for contiguous villages. Secondly, it has been argued that the ‘stickiness downwards’ of wage rates, particularly the rigidity downwards of daily money wages, is very marked and is not susceptible to explanation in terms of conventional economic theories. A useful approach by Rudra to these two problems is examined here and it is suggested that the striking contrasts that emerge between his model (based on Bengali data) and the Tamil model presented here show that it is essential to incorporate a micro‐level anthropological approach in order to understand rural wage rate determinants. There can be no pan‐Indian model: only through micro‐level approaches can researchers understand the importance of complex socio‐cultural contexts to the ways in which wage rates are formed and changed.  相似文献

Public housing policies in distressed communities if they are to succeed, must be based on much more realistic assumptions than they are now. We look at HOPE VI, a public housing policy that not only changes the physical environment, but also social services, job training, work opportunities, transportation, child care and other support services. Hintergrund des Beitrages ist die Beobachtung, dass sich durch zunehmenden globalen Wettbewerb die Beschäftigungsstrategien von Firmen verändern und prekäre Beschäftigung und Arbeitslosigkeit für immer mehr Erwerbstätige wahrscheinlich werden. Dabei ist aber anzunehmen, dass die konkreten Formen prekärer Beschäftigung und die differenzielle Betroffenheit bestimmter Beschäftigtengruppen vom nationalen institutionellen Kontext abhängen. Ziel des Artikels ist es, zum einen die Abhängigkeit vom institutionellen Kontext zu skizzieren und zum anderen empirisch zu untersuchen, in welchem Ausmaß bestimmte Personengruppen beim Einstieg in den Arbeitsmarkt im Deutschland der 80er und 90er Jahre von prekärer Beschäftigung und Arbeitslosigkeit betroffen sind. Es wird analysiert, inwieweit das Risiko befristeter Verträge und Arbeitslosigkeit nach Bildung, Ausbildung, Klassenlage, Geschlecht, ethnischer Herkunft und Region (Ostdeutschland vs. Westdeutschland) ungleich verteilt ist. Es zeigt sich, dass sowohl hoch wie niedrig qualifizierte Gruppen überproportional von befristeten Arbeitsverträgen betroffen sind; befristete Beschäftigung erhöht das Risiko von Arbeitslosigkeit, schließlich variiert das Arbeitslosigkeitsrisiko deutlich nach Bildungsabschluss, Klassenlage, Region und ethnischer Herkunft.  相似文献
