Dai Li, the head of the Chinese secret police and guerrilla forces, was headquartered at Chongqing, China, between 1942 and 1945. This article examines the history of SACO as a wartime institution during the war and its politicized legacy through the Cold War era. It is a study of history itself, of the memory of history, and of the politics of history.
