Will International Investment Rules Obstruct Climate Protection Policies? An Examination of the Clean Development Mechanism

Rules governing the global environment and the international economy are currently decided in separate arenas. Yet, environmental agreements can have strong economic implications, particularly with the growing use of market mechanisms. Economic liberalization rules, meanwhile, may limit the effectiveness of environmental agreements. This paper assesses the potential interaction between one important market-based environmental mechanism – the Clean Development Mechanism of the Kyoto Protocol on climate change – and the framework of international investment law.     

The investigation of blood and secretion stains by the absorption-elution reaction using anti-H monoclonal antibodies

Possible use of monoclonal antibodies anti-H in absorption-elution reaction was studied. Blood and secretion stains on gauze were analysed. Practical usefulness of monoclonal antibodies anti-H for investigation of human blood and secretions was stated. Differences in interaction of monoclonal antibodies with traces of different origin were found.     

Cooperative education and training at the grassroots in Nigeria

Faced with evidence of an appallingly low standard of living which the vast majority of men and women in Nigeria have despite two decades of development and cooperative movements, the Federal and State Governments now attempt to ensure that the real target of development are the human beings who will remain central to all redefinitions and to all revised strategies. This study proposes a theoretical framework for cooperative education and training programmes in the rural areas of Nigeria in order to raise the level of understanding and performance of cooperative members. The approach is primarily an amalgam of the general process model of organization systems and McGrath's problem - based/problem - solving systems. Application of the approach subsequently suggests a method of scientific inquiry which this paper conceives as the Cooperative Education Working Model. To be most effective, Nigerian cooperators must regard cooperative education and training as a vital benefit which their membership provides for them.     

Suicide by intravenous injection of sublimate solution

A 19-year-old drug-dependent man tried to commit suicide by intravenous self-injection of 5 ml concentrated mercury II chloride solution. He arrived at an intensive-care unit 2 h later with predominantly gastrointestinal symptoms and died 70 h later, despite hemodialysis and antidote therapy. The pathologic-anatomical picture was dominated by severe acute sublimate nephrosis and a coagulation disorder. The highest Hg content was found in the kidneys (5.69 mg%); in the gastrointestinal tract the Hg concentration lay between 1.12 and 3.26 mg%.

Drug packets are usually detected by ordinary abdominal radiographs, which is of major importance in the apprehension and prosecution of drug body packers, but false negatives may occur. We report the case of a cocaine body packer who had used the prograde route and in whom the initial abdominal plain films were normal. The diagnosis of cocaine body packing was assessed by seldom-described complementary methods of detection, including drug detection in the urine and contrast study of the bowel.
