Profiles of children's psychological states derived from the Gottschalk-Gleser content analysis of speech

Comparison of 17 different scores, obtained with the Gottschalk-Gleser content analysis scales, with norms for White and Black children has now been made easily possible by the development of two types of profile forms. The scores derived by this method are transformed by plotting them, on a grid, to standard scores. Form 1 provides a nonlinear transformation that does correct for skewness of the score distribution. Form 2 provides a linear transformation that does not correct for skewness. These forms can be used to examine patterns and trends pictorially in psychological state or trait scores derived from speech by this method.Received his medical degree at Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis. Current research interests include use of the Gottschalk-Gleser Content Analysis Method in Psychotherapy and further studies with children's language behavior.     

Industry/university licenses: A negotiating strategy

A lament often heard from U.S. industry licensing executives about their university (“university” refers to universities, not-for-profit research institutions, and hospitals) counterparts is, “they (university technology licensing officers) just don't understand business.” Conversely, university licensing managers criticize their industry counterparts for not understanding (or even trying to understand) the mission and constraints of university technology transfer. University licensing managers also accuse their industry counterparts as being predatory and seeking to take unfair advantage of university technology licensing opportunities. The purpose of this paper is to enhance the dialog between university licensors and industry licensees. This paper reviews the basis of university licensing, decries the focus on financial considerations, suggests references for further study of valuation and pricing issues, delineates companies' and universities' needs in licensing embryonic university technologies, and proposes a negotiation strategy.     

National financial structures,capital mobility,and international economic rules: The normative consequences of East Asian,European, and American distinctiveness

In addressing the relationship between the structures of national financial markets, capital mobility, and the rules governing international trade and investment, this article combines theory and policy. Focusing mainly on the United States, Germany, and Japan, it first draws together themes and suggestive evidence from diverse bodies of research on international capital mobility and national financial structures. On this basis, it argues that, notwithstanding the increasing mobility of capital, asymmetries in those structures persist and have important consequences for the rules of the international economic game as they are now evolving. The article then looks more deeply at East Asia, the region that appears to be presenting the clearest challenge to existing international rules. In its conclusion, and in light of that challenge, the article discusses the agenda that confronts researchers and policy-makers as they attempt to assess and re-calibrate rules to govern the more complex international economy of the 1990s and beyond.

THE USE OF TAX INCENTIVES FOR PUBLIC TRANSIT AS A SUBSIDY ALTERNATIVE

The objective of this paper is to propose a positive means of encouraging the use of public transit, through the creation and utilization of incentives aimed at stimulating demand. A tax incentive is proposed and examined as a form of revenue source subsidy which can be coupled with a congestion tolllgasoline tax policy to accomplish this demand stimulation, and is examined in light of the associated public policy issues. Taken into account are the typology of subsidy, the justification for subsidy, the sources of subsidy and the impact of different types of subsidy on economic factors, such as price and cost.     

Political Succession in the Middle East

The following briefs were presented in a workshop on "Political Succession in the Middle East" at the annual meeting of the American Political Science Association, September 1, 2001, in San Francisco. Louis J. Cantori, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and Augustus Richard Norton, Boston University, were the conveners of the Conference Group on the Middle East, which issued this report.
