Sequential Rent Seeking

We consider n firms which choose rent-seekingexpenditures sequentially, each player anticipatingthe rent-seeking expenditures that will be made bylater movers. We find that the earlier movers need notmake larger profits than later movers, and thataggregate profits are lower than in a game in whichfirms make simultaneous moves.     

“Is There a Getting Better From This,or Not?” Examining the Meaning and Possibility of Recovery From Mental Disorder

The concept of “recovery” from mental disorder is widely used in the national conversation about youth and adult mental health treatment as if everyone is on the same page about what it means. Fundamental disagreements among researchers and practitioners exist, however, on a variety of issues related to the precise nature and meaning of recovery from mental, emotional, and behavioral disorder generally. Among these issues are: (a) The meaning of recovery; (b) The possibility of full recovery; and (c) Effective support for recovery. After reviewing diverging responses for each of these three issues, we then trace practical implications of competing interpretations for treatment and recovery itself. As demonstrated throughout, the stance taken on these questions can have profound and lifelong consequences for youth and children in treatment.     

Fatal epiglottic abscess after radiotherapy for laryngeal carcinoma

ABSTRACT: Acute epiglottitis is a rare condition, especially in adults, largely owing to the widespread vaccination against Haemophilus influenzae. Traumatic epiglottitis as a result of thermal or caustic insults is documented. Epiglottic abscess formation is described as a sequela of epiglottitis in some cases. The development of epiglottic abscess from epiglottitis secondary to radiotherapy has previously been described in the literature; however, there are no reports of fatalities due to epiglottic abscess after radiotherapy. We present an unusual case of an adult sudden death due to epiglottic abscess formation subsequent to radiotherapy for laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma.     

Brahmā: An Early and Ultimately Doomed Attempt at a Brahmanical Synthesis

In this paper, I argue that, by comparing certain passages from the early Buddhist sūtras and the Mahābhārata, we can find evidence of a late- to post-Vedic “Brahmanical synthesis,” centered on the conception of Brahmā as both supreme Creator God and ultimate goal for transcending saṃsāra, that for the most part did not become a part of the Brahmanical synthesis or syntheses that came to constitute classical Hinduism. By comparing the Buddhist response to this early conception of Brahmā with the way in which Brahmā is treated in certain sectarian portions of the Mahābhārata, I then argue further that the Buddhist critique of Brahmā as supreme deity was in part conceded by the Brahmanical tradition, and sectarian accounts of supreme godhead sought to reconcile pravṛtti and nivṛtti values more subtly than the crude juxtaposition offered by the earlier Brahmanical synthesis offered by Brahmā. The result was that Brahmā was relegated to an inferior position as a fully saṃsāric demiurge, a narrative found first in certain parts of the Mahābhārata and then continued throughout most of the Purāṇas.
