The South Caucasus after Kosovo: Renewed Independence Hopes?

The recognition of Kosovo did not go unnoticed in other aspiring states, but did it necessarily lead to renewed hopes for independence? Drawing on interviews with key actors, this essay analyses its effect in Nagorno-Karabakh. It finds that separatist demands are shaped by a complex interplay of external and internal forces, including international norms and practices. This explains the rather surprising finding that the Karabakh leaders in response to the recognitions of Kosovo, Abkhazia and South Ossetia gave up on recognition, at least temporarily, and instead started championing non-recognition as an attractive, sustainable status.     

Cognitive orientation and consumer behaviour

Modern advertising research place too much emphasis on product differentiation, disregarding the more “traditional” theories of consumer behaviour as bases for market segmentation. In the present study, the author argues that these two strategies can not be separated, by developing reliable scales for the measurement of consumer orientation and indicating how it affects product evaluation.

以北京为样本,农村居家社区养老服务发展可以概括为两条主线、三个阶段和三类主要模式。两条主线为救助-适度普惠福利服务和居家-社区福利服务,三个阶段指由自发性的帮扶救助到村两委主导再到混合化运营,三类模式包括纯居家互助服务模式、互助服务+就餐模式、互助服务+综合模式。总体而言,农村居家社区养老服务应该是非营利定位的,互助服务是农村居家社区养老服务发展的关键,其发展路径可以概括为:分阶段、分类型地扩展救助型福利服务和适度普惠型福利服务;由福利的国家责任向国家、社会合作(发动社会参与,进行资金和服务互助)转变;由设施建设向服务供给转变;构建农村互助共同体等。

Some common questions about participatory research: a review of the literature

This article reviews, through reference to the published literature, some key questions about participatory research. When should participatory research be used? How should participatory research be applied? What about quality of science in participatory research? Are there any institutional issues associated with the use of participatory research? And what are the benefits and costs of participatory research? The article is not a comprehensive literature review on participatory research, it is not meant to set standards for participatory research, nor to define what constitutes ‘good’ participatory research, but rather it seeks to summarise the realities of implementing participatory research, as discussed and debated by several published authors, and to provide some useful background for this special issue.     

Can Callous-Unemotional Traits and Aggression Identify Children at High-Risk of Anti-Social Behavior in a Low Socioeconomic Group?

Frick et al. (2005) proposed that Callous-Unemotional (CU) traits may be an important personality dimension associated with youth offending. The goal of the present study was to examine whether CU traits were associated with risk factors for offending in a low SES sample of children aged 10 years to 11 years in New Zealand. Two subgroups were identified: one high (High-CU/Agg group) and one low (Low-CU/Agg group) on CU traits and aggression. Results showed that scores for the High-CU/Agg group were significantly worse compared to the Low-CU/Agg group on a range of measures including stress management, caregiver criminal convictions, and dysfunctional parenting. However, analyses revealed that the measure of aggression accounted for more unique variance compared to CU traits. Further research is needed with youths from low SES communities to develop a more robust profile of potential youth offenders.
