Over the last two decades in Canada, police intervention inwoman abuse cases has become one of the primary responsesto this form of violence against women. As a review of the literature reveals, however, very few studies have soughtto examine women's perceptions of the ``policing solution'to woman, and only a handful have explored the views ofimmigrant women. This is an unfortunate hiatus as studiesindicate that criminal justice intervention in woman abusecases can often bring in tow a multitude of harms to womenwho are socially and economically marginalized. As a steptowards addressing this hiatus, this article reports on theperceptions held by forty-eight immigrant women about the``policing solution' to woman. The data were generated fromfocus group interviews that occurred in New Brunswick in thespring of 1997. Many of the women indicated that they held anumber of fears about police intervention in woman abusecases and they identified a myriad of forms of harm thatcould and often does occur pursuant to police involvementin such situations given immigrant women's socio-economicvulnerability. Despite research on the effects of intimate partner violence (IPV) on children, little is known about its impact on cognitive
development. In this study, 87 preschool-aged children and their mothers exposed to IPV within the last two years participated
in interviews to ascertain verbal ability, history of violence, and exposure to trauma. When compared to a national sample
of 1,700 same-age children not evaluated for exposure to traumatic events, children exposed to IPV scored significantly lower
on verbal ability, as assessed with standardized measures. In order to understand variation in verbal ability, multiple regression
models were tested. Both prior exposure to traumatic events and the level of mother’s education were significant predictors

The purpose of this research is to describe the Omaha Metro Safety Initiative (OMSI) and assess its deterrent effects. The OMSI, a multi-agency task force, has been carrying out “hot spot” policing practices focused on traffic corridors in high crime areas. The purpose of OMSI operations is to deter crime through a highly visible “guardianship” presence that emphasizes contacts with citizens. Findings showed that a corridor approach was consistent with a “hot spot” policing strategy, in that operations occurred in hi-density crime areas. Nine crime categories were examined to assess the efficacy of 41 operations carried out in 2008. Generally, OMSI revealed a short term deterrent on crime, with the actual deterrent effect associated with the kind of crime assessed. Business crimes tended to show the most consistent operational deterrent effects. Effects also were more consistent in precincts with greater crime density. The language of the Hutchins Commission report, A Free and Responsible Press, written in 1947, is sexist. The language flaws the report, but certainly does not destroy its value. Language must be separated from content, such as in Plato's and Kant's writings. Although the Hutchins Commission uses unfortunate language, its message goes beyond mere toleration to a supererogatory duty: The ideal of the marketplace of ideas shall be made concrete. Just as Plato's vision of women ruling in equal numbers has yet to become reality and just as Kant's ethical vision of every human's liberation from mistreatment has yet to be realized, the Hutchins Commission's call for a chorus of voices remains unfilled. The call has been echoed and in some case intensified, such as in Carol Gilligan's work on the voices of women. But the goals remain undiminished beacons that remind us—educators as well as the media—that we still have much work ahead in order to achieve inclusiveness. 相似文献

Open meetings laws have long frustrated access advocates, who allege that prosecutors do little to ensure compliance. The states provide a variety of enforcement powers in their open meetings laws, but powerful anecdotal evidence exists supporting the contention that there is little enforcement. Prosecutorial discretion plays an obvious, though largely unstudied, role in the enforcement picture. To gain an understanding of the role of statutory language, prosecutorial discretion and other factors on open meetings enforcement efforts, the researchers conducted a national study of the officials responsible for enforcing open meetings laws. The survey offers the first national data on local enforcement activity and the first look at how prosecutors across the country view open meetings laws, illustrating the many weaknesses in current enforcement schemes.
