Review Article: International Distributive Justice

The literature on global justice contains a number of distinct approaches. This article identifies and reviews recent work in four commonly found in the literature. First there is an examination of the cosmopolitan contention that distributive principles apply globally. This is followed by three responses to the cosmopolitanism, – the nationalist emphasis on special duties to co-nationals, the society of states claim that principles of global distributive justice violate the independence of states and the realist claim that global justice is utopian and that states should advance national interest.     

Einschleusung von Migranten

In jüngster Vergangenheit hat sich die Einschleusung von Migranten zu einem neuen Massenphänomen weltweiter Wanderung entwickelt. Trotz seiner international steigenden Bedeutung wird der Menschenschmuggel von der Migrationssoziologie bislang kaum beachtet. Vor diesem Hintergrund gibt der vorliegende Beitrag zum einen — vorwiegend aus deutschem Blickwinkel — grundlegende Informationen über die Einschleusung von Migranten, zum anderen nähert er sich seinem Gegenstand aus soziologischer Perspektive. Menschenschmuggel lässt sich als sozialer Prozess verstehen, der durch ein Tauschgeschäft zwischen Migranten und Schleusern in Gang kommt und immer organisierter abläuft. Die starke Expansion der Einschleusung kann vor allem durch Globalisierungsprozesse und schleusungsbedingte Eigendynamiken erklärt werden. Wie die abschließende Evaluation bisheriger staatlicher Gegenmaßnahmen zeigt, können westliche Gesellschaften auch in nächster Zukunft nicht auf eine verstärkte Grenzsicherung verzichten.     

Using Data Combination of Fundamental Variable-Based Forecasts and Poll-Based Forecasts to Predict the 2013 German Election

In this paper I present an election forecasting approach to predict the vote share of the governing coalition in German national elections. The model is composed of two independent prediction components: the first is based on poll data, the second on fundamental variables. Both approaches have their advantages and disadvantages when used in isolation. The basic idea is to use both and find a better informed overall forecast. The predictions are combined using a shrinkage estimator, where the predictions are weighted by their respective prediction uncertainty. The uncertainty of the poll prediction is modelled time-dependent. The result is a dynamic model allowing for predictions longer before the elections highly relying on fundamental variables. With the elections coming closer predictions rely more and more on the polling data.     

Same same but different. Die Feldtheorien Fligsteins und Bourdieus und das Potenzial einer wechselseitig informierten Perspektive für die Wirtschaftssoziologie

Field theoretical approaches have become popular within economic sociology. Many even consider the notion of ?field“ a suitable alternative to the hegemonic paradigm of ?embeddedness“. This article outlines the epistemological potential of a field theoretical perspective by systematically comparing the approaches of Neil Fligstein and Pierre Bourdieu. By examining their respective contexts of emergence, their theoretical and methodological references, their research interests and their central concepts, both similarities and differences between the two approaches become visible. The resulting insights allow for a field theoretical and profoundly relational perspective on economic phenomena that might stimulate ongoing debates within economic sociology.
