Lifestyle illicit drug seizures: A routine ESI-LC-MS method for the identification of sildenafil and vardenafil

For street samples suspected of containing the phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors sildenafil (Viagra(?)) and/or vardenafil (Levitra(?)), including powders or adulterated herbal supplements, a chemical analysis is needed to provide confirmatory identification of these illegally procured substances. Sildenafil and vardenafil are structurally similar and it is difficult to differentiate between them, as previous mass spectrometric studies have shown the two drugs to produce similar fragmentation patterns. The use of tandem mass spectrometry can produce confirmatory data, but the technique requires a high level of technical expertise. We have developed an electrospray ionization-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (ESI-LC-MS) method that allows differentiation between these two structurally similar molecules via in-source fragmentation in combination with an ion trap mass spectrometer. A very stable gas phase ion is formed during in-source fragmentation of vardenafil; the combination of the stability of this ion and the longer residence time for the ion in the ion trap results in a very strong signal. This feature results in a method that can provide clear differentiation between sildenafil and vardenafil while at the same time requiring less expertise from the routine analyst to confirm the presence or absence of the two compounds.     

Grantmaking in a Disorderly World: The Limits of Rationalism

This article reflects on the real world relevance of rational approaches to grantmaking. The characteristics and environment of foundation work are outlined, then both traditional and newer funding practices are analysed. Unpacking implicit assumptions of a rational approach, eight costs to foundations and their grantees are identified. The final sections of the paper consider what grantmaking for a complex and disorderly world might encompass. In conclusion, while rational approaches to grantmaking provide a comfortable aura of certainty, funders need to adapt to a little discomfort.     

Militarized occupations: evolution of Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom’s 1920s intersectional conversation

Abstract

This article brings together transnational feminism, intersectionality, and militarized occupations by recovering Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom’s (WILPF) 1920s intersectional conversation. Mary Church Terrell, Helen Curtis, Addie Hunton, Jane Addams, and Emily Balch negotiated WILPF’s stance on two occupations: the controversy over the French use of colonial troops in its occupation of Germany, and the US occupation of Haiti. My argument is that through the evolving intersectional conversation, WILPF came to understand the necessity of weaving racialized sexual politics into its analysis of and activism around the politics of militarized occupations. To develop the argument, I construct and apply an ideal type of an intersectional conversation that incorporates a notion of unbracketing substantive inequalities during the conversation. I conclude with some implications for today about what we can learn in the twenty-first century from a moment in an early twentieth-century genealogy of intersectional transnational feminism.     

The Measurement of Adolescent Psychological Health: One or Two Dimensions?

Psychological health in adult populations has been conceptualized as being comprised of two distinct, though related, dimensions: well-being and distress. Research into adolescent psychological health, however, has been dominated by a single factor approach with well-being and distress defining opposite ends of this continuum. Measures of psychological health were administered to 345 late adolescents. A series of confirmatory factor analyses supported an oblique two-factor model of psychological health with measures of anxiety and negative affect defining a distress construct and measures of positive affect, satisfaction with life, and happiness defining a well-being construct. A measure of depression loaded on both well-being and distress. It is concluded that although these two dimensions are highly correlated, they are distinguishable in adolescent samples. It is suggested that to avoid confusion in the literature authors should take more care in labeling the aspects of psychological health that they wish to assess.
