Most past research on the effects of early pubertal timing on girls’ depressive symptoms and delinquent behavior has focused on either age of menarche or has combined multiple indicators of development into a single index of puberty. Past research has rarely examined both the onset of puberty such as age of menarche, as well more psychologically mediated impressions of puberty (i.e., perceived pubertal timing) within the same study. This study extends past research on racial differences and pubertal related effects on girls’ depressive symptoms and delinquent behavior by examining the independent influence of different indicators of puberty (age of menarche, development of breasts, and perceived pubertal timing). Two waves of data (100 % females) were used from African Americans (N = 481) and European Americans (N = 1259) who were enrolled in seventh- and eighth-grade during the first wave of data collection in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. Early age of menarche was associated with high levels of depressive symptoms at Wave 1. Additionally, both early and late perceived pubertal timing were associated with high levels of depressive symptoms and high delinquent behaviors at Wave 1. The structural relationships among these variables were similar for African Americans and European Americans. Age of menarche and perceived pubertal timing influenced depressive symptoms and delinquent behavior at Wave 2 through depressive symptoms and delinquent behavior reported at Wave 1. The implications of these findings are discussed with an emphasis on how the specific indicator used to assess puberty is important in efforts to understand pubertal timing effects. 相似文献

This article takes a case study approach to examine social justice-oriented environmental activism of faculty in the context of neoliberalism. As an evolving trend, university corporatization places new economic burdens on universities and their students and has contributed to a tenuous landscape for faculty in terms of academic freedom and job security. In particular, we examine a faculty-led response to hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado. Drawing on participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and campus-wide survey data, we document this response as a “tempered grassroots leadership” approach to workplace inquiry and activism. We discuss both the opportunities and limitations of promoting more transparent, informed, and inclusive decision-making on campus via internal and tempered activism strategies. Ultimately, this case presents lessons learned regarding social change practices of teacher-scholar-activists on college campuses. These experiences are especially germane in the “Trump era” of top-down and socially regressive decision-making.

The purpose of this study was to gain a clearer understanding of the pattern of video game and internet use among college
students and to examine how electronic leisure was related to risk behaviors (i.e., drinking, drug use, sex), perceptions
of the self (i.e., self worth and social acceptance), and relationships with others (i.e., relationship quality with parents
and friends). Participants included 813 undergraduate students (500 young women, 313 young men, M age = 20, SD = 1.87) who were mainly European American (79%), unmarried (100%) and living outside their parents’ home (90%).
Results suggested that (a) video game use was linked to negative outcomes for men and women, (b) different patterns of video
game and internet use existed for men and women and (c) there were different relations to risk behaviors, feelings about the
self, and relationship quality based on the type of internet use, and based on gender. The discussion focuses on the implications
of electronic leisure on the overall health and development of young people as they transition to adulthood. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the trajectories of behavioral problems for a sample of predominately minority
adolescents (n = 212, 91% African-American and/or Hispanic, 45% boys, 55% girls) in a large, urban school district and to determine the
impact of parental and peer relationships, gender, and risk status on their development during middle and high school. Multi-level
growth modeling was the primary statistical procedure used to track internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems across
time. Results indicated that behavioral problems as rated by students’ teachers declined significantly for both boys and girls,
a finding that is in direct contrast to previous studies of adolescent behavior. The quality of parental relationships was
a strong predictor of both types of behavior whereas the quality of peer relationships predicted only internalizing behavioral
symptoms. These findings suggest that behavioral trajectories may be somewhat unique for this population underscoring the
need for additional research in this area. The findings also have implications for intervening with children and youth who

The purpose of this study is to explore whether the transfers received by state governments in Brazil are being appropriated by the bureaucracy as wages. The wage differential between the public and private sectors was used as a measure of this appropriation, following the technique for wage decomposition proposed by Oaxaca. Our results show that transfers stimulate appropriation by the bureaucracy, but that private groups existing within the states contend for these resources. The results also indicate that the resources appropriated are distributed uniformly between the various groups composing the bureaucracy. 相似文献

Exposure to media violence, including violent video gaming, can have a cognitive desensitization effect, lowering empathic
concern for others in need. Since emerging adulthood offers increased opportunities to volunteer, strengthen relationships,
and initiate new relationships, decreases in empathic concern and prosocial behavior may prove inhibitive to optimal development
during this time. For these reasons, the current study investigated associations between violent video gaming, empathic responding,
and prosocial behavior enacted toward strangers, friends, and family members. Participants consisted of 780 emerging adults
(M age = 19.60, SD = 1.86, range = 18–29, 69% female, 69% Caucasian) from four universities in the United States. Results showed
small to moderate effects between playing violent video gaming and lowered empathic concern for both males and females. In
addition, lowered empathic concern partially mediated the pathways between violent video gaming and prosocial behavior toward
all three targets (at the level of a trend for females), but was most strongly associated with lower prosocial behavior toward
strangers. Discussion highlights how violent video gaming is associated with lower levels of prosocial behavior through the
mechanism of decreased empathic concern, how this association can affect prosocial behavior differently across target, and
finally what implications this might have for development during emerging adulthood. 相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to examine how peer group processes of pressure and control and individual motivations
for popularity would add to, and moderate the relationship between, childhood maltreatment and risky behavior in adolescence.
A total of 1558 youth (804 girls) from three high schools in Ontario, Canada (M age = 15.02 years, SD = .86) reported on their alcohol use, delinquent behavior, childhood experiences of physical and emotional
maltreatment and neglect, peer group processes involving control and individual popularity motivations. Regression analyses
showed that, beyond the significant contributions of childhood maltreatment, peer group control predicted risky alcohol use
and delinquent behavior. Peer group control and popularity motivations exacerbated the negative effect of physical maltreatment
on delinquent behavior. Boys’ experiences of peer group control were more strongly linked to alcohol use and delinquent behavior
than girls’. These results suggest that there is a significant window of opportunity during adolescence where the peer group
context can exacerbate or buffer childhood experiences.

Adolescents spend only a fraction of their waking hours in school and what they do with the rest of their time varies dramatically.
Despite this, research on out-of-school time has largely focused on structured programming. The authors analyzed data from
the Educational Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS:2002) to examine the out-of-school time activity portfolios of 6,338 high
school sophomores, accounting for time spent in school clubs and sports as well as 17 other activities. The analytical sample
was balanced with respect to sex and racially and ethnically diverse: 49% female, 67% White, 10% Latino, 10% African American,
and 6% Asian and Pacific Islander. Approximately 76% of the sample attended public schools, 30% were in the highest socioeconomic
quartile, and 20% were in the lowest socioeconomic quartile. The authors identified five distinct out-of-school time activity
portfolios based on a cluster analysis. The demographic profiles of students by portfolio type differed significantly with
respect to sex, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, school type and location. Students by portfolio type also differed significantly
in terms of measures of academic success, school behavior, victimization and perceptions of school climate, controlling for
covariates. These findings underscore the importance of more complex considerations of adolescents’ out-of-school time.

Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis and multi-group structural equation modeling were used to test correlates of overt
and relational aggression between young adolescent siblings across four groups (i.e., male/male, male/female, female/male,
and female/female sibling pairs), using 433 predominately European American families. Similar patterns of associations were
found across groups when distinguished by gender composition. Family environment emerged as an important factor in explaining
internalizing problems as well as overt/relational aggression for both younger and older siblings. While perceived maternal
psychological control was significantly positively related to overt/relational aggression and internalizing problems for younger
siblings, it was significantly positively associated with only relational aggression for older siblings. Findings also provided
partial support for the positive linkages between young adolescents’ aggression and their own and siblings’ internalizing
problems above and beyond the aforementioned family and maternal variables. Results of the current study extend the understanding
of adolescent aggression to a new relational context, or among siblings, and highlight the role of family factors in promoting
or buffering the impact of aggression on internalizing behaviors.
