Fatal intoxication due to tramadol alone: case report and review of the literature

Poisoning may also lead to both coma and multiple organ failure, also in youngsters without a known major medical history. As not all toxic agents are routinely screened when a poisoning is suspected, it is useful to consider less frequently encountered poisons in certain cases. We describe the occurrence of asystole and multiple organ failure which occurred in a young man after a suspected tramadol overdose. The tramadol concentration on admission in the ICU was indeed 8 microg/ml (mg/l), far above the therapeutic range. Subsequently, the patient developed severe acute liver failure, finally leading to death. Post-mortem toxicology did not reveal any other poison responsible for this unfavourable course as only very high serum and tissue tramadol and desmethyltramadol concentrations were found. Only a few fatal poisonings attributable to tramadol alone, as observed in our case, have been reported. An overview of these cases is presented.     

Trends in Women's Gun Ownership, 1973–2002

In recent years controversy has arisen over whether the rate of women's gun ownership has increased over time. While media reports claimed a rising trend in women's gun ownership, existing scholarly studies found stable rates over time. This paper investigates the issue using the 1973–2002 General Social Survey data. Our bivariate analysis reveals a declining trend in female gun ownership, especially in recent years. The logistic regression results indicate that holding relevant variables constant, the probability of female gun ownership decreases over time. Comparisons are also made with men. Similar results for male gun ownership are obtained. Possible explanations and implications of findings are discussed.     

Results of the Corporate Affairs Survey 2004

The Corporate Affairs Survey 2004 confirms that companies with representation in Brussels continue to increase their communications expenditure. This confirms a trend already identified by the European Centre for Public Affairs in various publications¹ during the 1990s. Realising the importance of public opinion in policy making, the majority of companies are increasing the size of their Brussels staff, with a deliberate emphasis on communication and further resources in public affairs. As most companies recognise the special skill sets of consultants, many plan to continue relying on the latter, particularly in the area of public relations. An Immunological Approach to Counter-Terrorism and Infrastructure Defense Law in Electronic Domains

The West’s increasing dependence upon telecommunicationsand information infrastructures puts at risk the economic, political,and military security of the free world. The purpose hereinis to gauge the extent to which the law properly supplementsand coordinates the defense of that information infrastructure. First undertaken is an overview of the telecommunications vulnerabilitiesand dependencies of the West. The nature of terrorism is thenexplored, and principles of counter-terrorism are examined andapplied specifically with reference to electronic domains. Thereafter,Immunological modeling and principles are surveyed. The analysis continues with an examination of the current postureof Western legal systems, and a comparison of the laws relatingto counter-terrorism in electronic domains before and afterthe events of 11 September. An exploration of continuing vulnerabilitiesthen follows. Finally, recommendations for future defensiveactions are promulgated with the aim of optimizing the roleof law in information infrastructure defense.
