Modernity seems to bring a type of relationship with life whereby life appears to be distant. Individuals may mitigate this distance by attaining a meaningful life, but this requires time, decisions and a purpose. In the late modern context, these dimensions – time, decisions and vital purposes – appear to be shaped in a way that further increases this remoteness. This paper analyses how the narratives associated with these three dimensions foster a way of understanding them that restricts the relationship which individuals build with their own lives. The late-modern remoteness from life may stem from experiencing a lifetime without significant time, decisions without real choice and particular forms of self-fulfilment that misappropriate the relationship with life.  相似文献

Abstract

The varying degrees of political novelty and continuity brought about by the arrival of Hispanic constitutionalism are assessed in this article. It sheds light on the adaptations and the role played by pre-existing discourses and rituals in the articulation of the self-proclaimed “liberal” institutions, both in the Iberian Peninsula and in the new independent Latin American territories. The tensions between individualistic and collectivistic representations of political power are at the centre of the analysis. The text thus seeks to make an original contribution to current debates in historiography regarding the emergence of a liberal subjectivity in the early nineteenth century and its limits.  相似文献

From the point of a normative idea of equality, all citizens are entitled to equal access to the cities public spaces. In the public debate, the media have often been blamed for contributing to people's fear and insecurity and the avoidance of public places, especially after dark. In this paper, the author addresses the question of how and to what extent experiences of risk and threats in the media, perceptions of crime coverage in the media and third-person-effects of risk and threats influence the degree of avoidance of public places and the variation in people's experiences of the sensation of feeling fear and insecurity in public places. The main results presented here are primarily based on survey data from a well known regional survey (Western SOM) performed in 2001-2007 on approximately 3,000 inhabitants in the local region of Gothenburg, Sweden. Experiences of risk and threats through the media are of minor importance for the independent effect on the experiences of the sensation of feeling fear and insecurity in public spaces. The main role of the media is through the perceptions the respondents have on media coverage on crime and media influence on their own and others experiences of threats and risks. Those that believe that media coverage on crime is understated have to a greater extent avoided public places and experienced the sensation of feeling fear and insecurity than those that believe that media coverage of crime is coherent with reality or overstated. The third-person-effects that occur also have consequences. Those that believe that media influence experiences of threats and risks have to a greater extent experienced the sensation of feeling fear and insecurity than those that don't believe in media influence (on both others and themselves). The main conclusion presented in this paper is that the avoidance of public places and variation in people's experiences of the sensation of feeling fear and insecurity in public places is more related to people's perceptions of media content and media influence regarding risk and threats than experiences of risk and threats through the media. This, however, doesn't mean that the experience of risk and threats through the media doesn't matter. Experience of risk and threats through the media matters, but do so through reinforcing personal and social experiences of risk and threats.  相似文献

The paper outlines parallels between the processes of secularization and secularity in the West, as interpreted by José Casanova and Charles Taylor, and Islamism as a modern social and political phenomenon. It focuses on the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood’s history and ideas and specifically on a number of public documents detailing its social and political vision. I argue that if we define ‘secularization’ not only as the weakening of religious belief, but as the institutional differentiation of modern state structures and the marginalization of religion, and ‘secularity’ as the process whereby faith becomes one option among others and religion becomes an identifiable set of beliefs seen as guidelines for reform, the Brotherhood, similarly to other Islamist entities, is a phenomenon of a ‘secular age’.  相似文献

本文以精卫鸟这一氤氲贯穿于现代中国女性作家由"尽心力"以"创人生"开启书写的具体意象出发,探讨了她们在风格多样的跨界转换中孕育生成的现代本体驱动和寓意形态。文中以秋瑾、冰心、卢隐、萧红、丁玲等作家书写为例,分析其对于生物族裔政治及其建构逻辑的"结构性潜意识"如何与其以"尽心力"而移动结构性限制、改写历史命运的"日常胆识"相互交织融合。这样的意识与身体互融,以不同的形式渗透并推动着这些女性书写,在认知与情感、伦理与审美的结合融通中,进一步催生了跨界诗学的变革动能。本文旨在示意蕴含其中有待阐释的历史信息,与常规西学自现代以来的两分法及其既定内容呈现出的差异对照。精卫鸟与现代中国女性作家所承载的"生成的现代性"为叩问、改写、融会、扬弃由这些族裔、性别、物种范畴暨分类逻辑所规定的现代西学及其局限性提供了有力的思想资源。  相似文献

The rise of Islamic politics in the Middle East, particularly since the Iranian revolution, is the most cited example that supposedly testifies to the “clean” separation between “Islam” and the “West.” In this essay, I argue that it is not Islamic movements and ideology that confirm this separation. Rather, it is their incorporation into the scheme of Western modernity, with its binary distinctions and evolutionary reading of history, which constructs this separation. Using examples from Iran and Palestine, I show how Islamic ideology indeed defies the basic premises of Western discourse on modernity, expose its limitations, and question the constitution of Islam and the West as allegedly distinct, even opposing, categories.
