ABSTRACT The scale and scope of the ‘final solution’ of the ‘Jewish question’ were extreme even in the horrific annals of genocide. Bloxham attempts to shed light on the pattern of mass murder in its expansion and contraction by viewing the Holocaust in a set of temporally and culturally specific contexts. It places the Holocaust into a broader European framework of violent ethnopolitics and geopolitics from the late nineteenth century through the mid-twentieth century. The Holocaust is depicted as an only partially discrete part of a continental process of traumatic flux, and a part, furthermore, that can itself be partially disaggregated into national and regional components. Bloxham moves from a general consideration of patterns of ethnic violence in the period to a closer causal explanation that shows the different valences of Nazi policy towards Jews in the lands directly ruled by Germany and those of Germany's allies respectively. He shows that the peculiarly extensive ambitions of the ‘final solution’ at its most expansive can only be explained when wider geopolitical and strategic contextual terms are factored in along with consideration of Nazi ideology and the internal dynamics of some of the key institutions of the perpetrator state. 相似文献

The normative figure in Western feminism remains the liberal autonomous individual of modernity. ‹Other’ women are those who
have their freedom to choose restricted. Typically, ‹other’ women are those burdened by culture and hindered by their communities
from entering modernity. If we remain in the terrain of thinking about women as vulnerable or imperilled, and some women as
particularly imperilled, as we generally do of Muslim women, we remain squarely within the framework of patriarchy understood
as abstracted from all other systems. A modernity/premodernity distinction will continue to invade any projects intending
to help Muslim women. This paper shows the persistence of the modernity/premodernity distinction in contemporary debates around
applying Sharia law to the settlement of family law disputes under the Arbitration Act in Ontario, Canada. I argue below that
in their concern to curtail conservative and patriarchal forces within the Muslim community, Canadian feminists (both Muslim
and Non-Muslim) utilized frameworks that installed a secular/religious divide that functions as a colour line, marking the
difference between the modern, enlightened West, and tribal, religious Muslims. I suggest that feminist responses might have
helped to sustain a new form of governmentality, one in which the productive power of the imperilled Muslim woman functions
to keep in line Muslim communities at the same time that it defuses more radical feminist and anti-racist critique of conservative

调解作为一种解决纷争的做法和制度 ,是我国传统法律文化尤其是儒家法律文化的重要部分。在现代法治社会中 ,调解否已经过时 ?本文首先介绍中国的调解传统的哲学基础、理论和实践 ,然后从现代自由主义和法治理想的角度 ,对传统的调解提出批判。本文进而指出 ,调解在当代的中国以至西方仍有顽强的生命力 ,西方学者对调解作为“解决纠纷的另类选择”之一提出了多种理论依据 ,其中不少与儒家传统的睿见不谋而合。本文的结论是 ,经过“创造性转化”后的调解理论与实践能对现代文明作出贡献 ,由此可见 ,传统文化遗产在现代仍是十分宝贵和有用的资源。 相似文献

The expectation that a novel about a celebrity aviator will romanticise flight and glorify the pilot is a product of the mythologisation of aviation, which this essay understands is a response to the threat of technology and the alienating conditions of modernity. Roger McDonald’s novel Slipstream refuses to reproduce this mythology, expressing a literary aspiration to use the form of the modern novel to explore the entanglement of the subject under the conditions of postcolonial modernity. My argument will develop through three parts. The first section will explore the mythologisation of aviation as a symptom of modernity. The second will examine the ways in which the novel uses its modernist form to call into question the celebrity of the aviator and the spectacle of flight. This part of my argument is indebted to the critique by German philosopher Martin Heidegger of the technological mode of Being. Finally, I take up the postcolonial implications of the Heideggerian critique in a country in which many of modernism’s standard antidotes to the problems of its century are compromised by the legacies of colonialism. 相似文献
